How Long

How long shall I pine for love?
How long shall I live in vain?
How long like the moon above,
Shall I so mornfully complain?

How long can I wait for you?
How long shall it take with her?
How long like the water blue,
Shall the tears in my eyes make my view a blur?

I sought you but I could not find you, all life long
The road through wood and meadow rambled here and there;
With crowded stars, and I was calling to you in a song
But none had heard of you, or seen you passing anywhere.

I need to find you, for I need your love to set me free
Please come let the trapped larks within my heart escape and fly
Please be done with her and make it possible for us to be
Please do not leave me here singing about you as you ride by

Just look out unto your window and see
My passion and my pain;
From a distant desert I come to thee
And I now know what is to become of us, so I faint in thy disdain.
