A TRUE LOVER

(Taken from a paper written by Valerie Goodfellow, edited by Nicole Berwick.)

There are many things most men haven’t been raised to do, and one of them is making a woman feel like a goddess. Every woman secretly craves the hero of storybook romance or the passion of a romance novel. A true lover is a lover of all things, especially women. He studies them, knows what they like, and knows how to treat them as no other man can. A true lover will fill your life with passion every hour of every day. He will make you feel sensuous and erotic whether you are young, old, beautiful, ugly, fat or thin. A true lover will make you feel beautiful and glorious even when you think your not. He will tell you are the most beautiful creature in the world and then make you believe it. He will make you feel alive just by walking into a room. If you are overweight a true lover will tell you that you are succulent or voluptuous. A true lover will bring you coffee; croissants and a single flower (your favorite kind of course) in bed. He will soap your back in the shower and draw you a hot bath after a long day and know exactly which oil to put in it. A true lover will never come first and will never forget about you. He will never roll over and pass out after making love when you want to be held and cuddled; he will hold you tenderly until you fall asleep. A true lover will never take himself too seriously. He will teach you to sip wine from his mouth instead of a glass. A true lover will let you put your cold feet on him in bed without yelping. He will make love to you no matter what time of the month it is but only if you want to. A true lover will kiss your toes when you have been on your feet all day and rub your stomach if you have cramps. He will take care of you when you are ill and kiss your cuts and scrapes with genuine tenderness. He is understanding and cares about how you feel about every aspect of life. There is no part of you a true lover will not accept. A true lover will always hold the door for you and sit on the same side of the table with you at a restaurant. He pulls out chairs; he stands when you leave the table and stands when you enter a room. He notices the little things like the goose bumps when you are cold and is quick to offer his jacket or to warm you in other ways. He is a true gentleman. He knows how to please you and loves proving it over and over again. A true lover will wrap his arms around you from behind and cradle you lovingly in an elevator even if it’s full. He will bring you little presents for absolutely no reason and he will be filled with joy when you like them. A true lover will appreciate you. He will marvel at the simple little things you do…like humming your favorite song when you make coffee. He will never see you without expressing delight. He will not come in and pick up the mail without kissing you first. When you are not there he will think of you and become turned on by just the thought of you. A true lover will hold you for an hour in the most uncomfortable position just so as not to wake you if you fall asleep on the way home from a concert. He will nuzzle your cheek as he politely listens to stories from his friends. He will pick you up and twirl you around in the middle of a crowded intersection just because he is filled with joy at being with you. He will kiss you passionately in the subway or the park just because he is proud to be seen loving you anywhere. A true lover will act in real life like the men in perfume commercials do. A true lover will caress your entire body slowly in the morning to wake you up gently without wanting sex unless of course you do. He will pull your arm gently back under the covers on a cold winter night. He will pamper you not because he’s macho but because he truly believes you deserve it. A true lover is fun. He will spend the day at the mall with you without complaining because he loves the fashion show you put on. Between shopping and the movies he will whisk you off to a nearby hotel for a quickie just because something you said turned him on. A true lover will hold your hand through an entire movie even if he has the popcorn. He will sing you love songs in every language he knows. He will stop on his way somewhere else just to kiss you. He will make you feel sensuous even when you are not feeling sexual. A true lover will tell you he loves you every day and then tell you why. At times, he will hold you and look at you with such tenderness you will not be able to breathe for a moment. He will fill you with such overwhelming feelings of love that you will have to sit down to recover. When you are brewing coffee a true lover will fondle you and rub up against you just because he loves the feel of you. A true lover will think it wonderful if you take a day off from work or an afternoon nap and if he has to wake you he will do so gently by whispering your name. He will encourage you to indulge yourself and follow your dreams because he believes it is good for you. In the morning afters he will kiss you awake so you don’t have to be awakened by the ringing of your alarm clock. A true lover will often press the back of your hand against his lips as he’s driving. He will hold you close in the shower and rinse the shampoo from your hair and if you have to leave first in the morning he will make the bed and leave a flower on the pillow for you to find when you come home. He will call you just to say he loves you. A true lover will always put your sexual needs before his own; he will make love to you when he’s tired and will take any amount of time to satisfy you. A true lover is tender, sensitive and gentle. He will kiss the insides of your wrists and the soft place bellow your ankle and places you didn’t know could respond. A true lover will never find talking about your relationship stressful or irritating he will never be too busy to talk about your feelings and needs. When you fight he will be the first to call and make up. He will write you poetry. He will always leave you a wonderful message on your machine not just say he called. When you leave him after a date he will call your machine so there is a message waiting for you when you get home. A true lover will never bore you. He will always say he’s sorry. He understands women. He will tell you if there is a bump coming when you are doing your makeup in the car. He understands moods and frustration and striking out for no reason. A true lover won’t strike back he will hold you until you are normal again. You will always feel safe in his arms. He will do the laundry because he knows you haven’t had the time. A true lover knows when to talk and when to just hold you. He will build love on moments because he knows it is the little things that really count. He will stroke your body with a peacock feather one afternoon just because. He will never make you feel inept for not balancing your checkbook or make you feel stupid because you don’t know something. He won’t make you feel guilty about ordering and ice cream sundae when you are supposed to be on a diet because he likes you just fine the way you are. A true lover isn’t critical. He will think it is cute when you have bed hair and never judge your actions because he values your decisions. A true lover will drop everything to be there when you need him. He will leave work if you start to cry on the phone. He will stop whatever he is doing if he thinks you need him. He will leave a meeting or his friends just to come put his arms around you. You are his number one priority. You will be his passion not the playoffs. He will put your well being and happiness above everything, even his own. He will put you above everything. He will put your relationship above everything. A true lover will never take you for granted He will say that love is more important than all else and it will be true. Even if only for brief moments every day every man has the ability to be a true lover. Don’t we all wish we had a true lover?
