Militarization of Space: Institutions

Institutions

Major institutions that deal with space law and administration are departments of the United Nations. Most of them, however, do not deal with the militarization of space, but merely ensure the peaceful use of space, like the Security Council, for instance. Office for the Outer Space Affairs (OOSA) and Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space are other departments, which are concerned with exploration and use of space, rather than its militarization.

Conference on Disarmament, on the other hand, is focused precisely on matters concerned with the militarization and weaponization of outer space. Conference meets once a year in Geneva, where the representatives of member states discuss disarmament and prevention of space militarization issues.

Although of no less importance, European Space Agency (ESA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), do not play much of a role in disarmament discussions. Being mostly research facilities, both ESA and NASA are capable of technologies fit enough to militarize the outer space.
