Theater & National Missile Defense

Theater and National Missile defense systems are closely integrated, and the distinction can be drawn only on the system application, with the assumption that ground-based interceptors are generally under the National Defense System umbrella. Theater missile defense is by large a surface-based system with a limited number of air-based components. It plays a major role in existing projects of Ballistic Missile Defense System. Boost segment defense is currently only possible with the airborne laser. In future, however, the development of space-based lasers with the boost phase interception capability and space-based missile tracking systems are looked forward to. Midcourse segment defense consists of existing National Missile Defense components, such as ground and sea-based interceptors. Components of the Theater Missile Defense, which play role in defense of the terminal segment of the missile trajectory, are also classified as part of National Missile Defense.

The components of Theater Missile System include:
  • HAWK (Haul-All-the-Way-Killer)
  • MEADS (Medium Extended Air Defense System)
  • Navy Area
  • Patriot
  • THAAD (Theater High Altitude Area Defense)
  • Navy Upper Tier
  • Airborne Laser
  • Boost Phase Intercept
  • Arrow Weapon System
  • THEL/Nautilus
  • LCCMD
  • Other
