For the final project for the memoir When I was a Puerto Rican, you will perform a skit about the book. You will be split into three groups to cover the entire memoir. The first group will do from the beginning of the book to page 130. This is the section that takes place in Mancun. The second group will do the section that takes place in El Mangle. This runs from page 131 to page 210. The third group will do the rest of the book, which is set in New York.
The skits will be a minimum of 15 minutes long. There has to be a written script as a theatrical exercise to help you better understand the characters and the situations in the book. I want the skits to include cultural references such as clothing, food and even language that Negi writes about in your section. All students must work together to produce this script. Every student must have at least 3 lines in the script. Props are restricted to whatever can fit into the garbage bag that I give you. The skits do not need to be a simple retelling of the story. You may chose to be as creative as they want, as long as the factual points in the story are retold. You may do a game show where the questions are all related to the book. You may do a simulated newscast where characters from the book are interviewed. You may of course do a skit that simply summarizes your groups assigned section of the book. Any other creative idea will be fine as long as your group checks with me first to get an okay. Your group will perform their skit and then have 5 minutes in which to answer any questions. I will ask questions myself but I expect most of the questions to come from you students. You may ask whatever questions come to their mind or take them from questions that came up in your journal. Your group is expected to be experts on your section of the book. In the question and answer segment as well, there must be somewhat equal participation. Each person will be expected to answer at least one question.
You will be able to grade each others' participation in the project. You will be able to give your fellow group members anywhere from 10 to 0 points depending on how much effort they put into the preperformance preparation. 0 would mean the student did not help at all. A 10 would mean that the student actively helped in the creation of the skit and made a valuable contribution. Please write any comments that you might deem necessary about a specific group member, or even the group as a whole on the grade sheet. The remaining 40 points will be decided on by me. Each student will be graded individually in the skit. If all of the students participated equally, they will get the same grade. 10 points will go for the final copy of the written script. 15 points will be decided by the amount and correctness of factual information having to do with the novel, in the skit. 10 points will be for individual participation. 15 points will be for the overall presentation. That makes a total of 50 points. I will give the students a rubric of the grading scheme along with the description of the assignment so they know how it will be graded from the beginning.
