Like most great manga series, GTO is also animated. It was aired on TV around when I stayed in Japan (August ‘99-June ’00). It’s by Studio Pierot (the same people who did Fushigi Yuugi, Ayashi no Ceres, etc…), and is a cute supliment to the manga.
Differences from the manga
I’ve seen the series from start to finish with a couple missing episodes here and there. For the most part, it covers volumes 1-13 of the manga. Most episodes were taken directly out of the manga, while others were completely original to the anime (or possibly borrowed from the prequel to GTO, "Shounan Junai-kumi"). Some specific differences are as follows:
*Everything basically tends to be toned down. Onizuka’s fantasy of Fuyutsuki naked in an apron is replaced with Fuyutsuki wearing *underwear* and an apron ^_^. Anko’s and her friends’ butts ARE written on by Yoshikawa and Onizuka, but their underwear is left ON, etc. ^_^;
*The school nurse, Naoko, is not introduced until the middle of the series, and is a completely different character (only her name is the same)
*The English teacher, Sakurai, has a name-change to "Sakurada", and is not a peeping-Tom, but a closet-cross dresser ^_^;
*Toroko does not play with her dolls on stage at the Miss Inokashira Park contest. Instead, she leaves a very touching message in Miyabi’s answering machine while on stage. I liked this change since the anime is more serious than the manga…
*Fukada (the girl Murai was in love with) does not exist. Instead, she is a cute, annoying little girl named "Akane"
*Fuka-chan also does not exist T_T. (correction, she DOES exist. Her character just isn’t as developed and she comes in later in the series and under different contex).
*Urumi’s "secret" is revealed early on (even though back when that episode was aired on TV, Urumi’s secret hadn’t even been revealed in the manga yet…it makes me wonder…)
*The incident in the hotel suite with Miyabi’s gang and the SM-otaku is replaced with a simple kidnapping T_T.
*The whole episode in the anime with the chain letter was completely made-up….though I really like that episode ^_^.
* The last 2 episodes, to bring about an "end" (since the manga was only up to volume 15 or so when the anime was scheduled to end), they created their own original ending. This is much different from the ending in the manga (including the reason Miyabi held a grudge against her teacher). I personally like the manga ending much better, but the very end of the anime is cute, too.
Theme Songs
I own 3 out of 5 of them ^-^. The first opening theme song (episodes 1-16) was"Driver’s High" (by Larc~en~Ciel).
The first ending theme was "Last Piece" (by Kirari).
The second opening theme was "Hitori no Yoru" (by Porno Graffiti).
The second ending theme was "Shizuku" (by a rookie, Okuda Miwako) Out of all of the themes, I like "Shizuku" the best…
The third ending theme was "Cherished Memories" (by the Hong Kong Knife…the same idiots who did the ending theme to "Yami no Matsuei".) I might translate this song later, but would prefer not to subject myself to the torture of listening to it.
Episode Translations
Due to annoying and complicated circumstances, I offer every episode I translated (1-23) for FREE. Everything is explained in further detail and the scripts are provided at my GTO Fansub Page.
GTO Seiyuu (voice actors)
I compile this list as I translate episodes (at least for the extras and one-episode characters), but have most of the main cast up. If anyone knows some of the names I have in "?", tell me, please *__* I can only read so much from a fuzzy TV-screen on pause ^^;
