smith comma john is the result of an idea mike and nick had a few years back. They used to jam a lot, playing mostly covers. I attended one of these jams sessions a couple years back, and I remember hours of playing weezer’s “say it aint so” and local h’s “bound for the floor”. We all slightly improved over the next couple years, and nick and mike decided to start a real band with harold. I, who had been talking to nick about the joys of playing in a geek rock band, joined the band shortly after.
we started with the name simple simon…until we found out that there are already a couple simple simons out there. so, we changed our name to smith comma john. The name comes from a MAD TV sketch about an alien that runs for president. you can find a transcript on the sketch here. our main goal was to have fun and combine our influences to create some decent tunes.
The band lasted only a few months , played only a few shows, and had to come to an end after lead singer n. salata left to move on with his life in baltimore, maryland. we tried to release a live cd, but there were studio problems with the original recording so it never really worked out. anyway, it was a lot of fun and its something i dont think we'll ever forget. geek rock will live on in every nerdy social outcast weezer fan that dares pick up a guitar :D
