My Mos Isely Cantina
I’ve always been impressed with Star Wars Gamer Magazine, and will miss its publication. The feature that caught my attention from the start was Model Citizen. Whether they covered Tatooine (three times) or the Death Star, here was an article stating that here are some great visual aides if you have the time, talent, patience and will to build them. I have neither the talent nor the actual mechanical means to make anything like they shown in Gamer, I did have the time (am/was currently unemployed at the time), patience, and will to build the Mos Isely Cantina.

Finding out very early on in the development of the project, that my fathers jig and circular saws were “dead”, I had to go improvise and borrow from the neighbors. Marvin Ehm let me borrow his jigsaw which cut out everything in this project. Garron Blunt and my father, Tom, where the unlucky volunteers that held down the base of the cantina as I cut it out. Luckily the Black and Decker Versapack Drill I got my father a two years ago is in good working order, as was their Dremmel Cordless Rotary tool. Although, later on, the Dremmel eventually left this world (I burned out the motor).

I improvised with most of my building, having no money, and nothing but time, I scrounged up all the wood, some 1 ½ inch flat headed screws, ceiling paint (trust me on this), marker caps, and various container caps. Later I was given money to finish my dream. I still have to lay in the floor, but that’s more a matter of cleaning an attic storage closet than money right now. If you’re wondering on my final budget, try under $10. Of course, that’s only buying 2 jigsaw blades to replace the ones I broke, 2 cans of Ehlmer’s Interior Wood Putty, 2 cans of Wal-Mart Brand Almond Spray paint, and one can of Wal-Mart Brand Gold Spray paint.
