Light a Match

the Beautiful Mistake Light a Match... For I Deserve to Burn
the Militia Group

After an EP from these guys, I can’t say how psyched I was for this full length. If you don’t yet have their EP, fear not, there is still time to get it along with this, their debut full length.

To describe the sound of the Beautiful Mistake is tough. They have melodic parts that could be put into that indie rock catagory, but also hardcore parts that almost make me afraid not to call them hardcore. The way I like to think of it is, that the Beautiful Mistake is doing something along the lines of a band like Thrice, only they sound nothing like Thrice at all. Basically, this is not a Thrice rip-off band, they just have the same sort of idea behind their music.

Songs like “Stabbing Bakwards” open with the obvious hardcore and screaming of “How can you call me your friend”, while even “Circular Parade” starts with enough melody to make Incubus cream. At times, hearing the singing and screaming trading off reminds me a bit of Waterdown or even Haste, but that’s only based on the vocals, not so much the actual music.

From a musical standpoint, these guys are big fans of melody in mayhem. They’ll have the most thundering hardcore break down parts, and then turn it into a pretty little guitar riff or better yet an intracite guitar note plucking. Needless to say, you will be blown away by this musical content. Guarenteed.

For the hardcore/die hard fans of the Beautiful Mistake, you’ll notice the song “Circular Parade” (previously available from MP3.com before this came out) along with “Stavesail” and “For a Friend”, which both appeared on a recent SideCho comp. Not to mention that “For a Friend” also closes out their previous EP. That’s for the die hard fans.

If you have any doubts as to what this CD entails, I suggest you give the title track a listen. With a title this good, you’d hope there’d be a song along the same lines. Well, let me tell you... Between the singing and screaming of “light a match, for I deserve to burn”, it culminates with this awesome exchange of “burn/burn/burn/burn” between singing and screaming. Wow. If you get nothing but that out of this fine CD, it should be worth it for you. But there is so much more. Every song from start to finish... This is one of the best CDs to come out ever.
