Interview with Breakthrough
July 14, 2001
Cynthia: What are your names?
Garth: Garth
Kevin: Kevin
Willy: Willy
Eric: Eric
Cynthia: And you sing right?
Garth: yeah, I sing and play guitar.
Kevin: I sing and play drums.
Willy: I play bass and I sing sometimes.
Eric: I drive the car.
Kevin: He's is our road manager.
Cynthia: OK, so first off, how did you guys become a band? How long have you guys been a band?
Willy: We've been a band for almost seven months now. It started, me and Kevin kinda met at school and we kinda messed around at my house a little bit, kinda jammed a little bit, wrote a little bit....
Cynthia: Are you guys still in school?
Willy: Yeah.
Cynthia: You guys are in high school?
Willy: Yeah, and then we just kinda decided we wanted to be a band and talked to one of our friends, got us our first show, and kinda took it from there.
Cynthia: That's cool. How'd you guys come up with your band name?
Kevin: Well, we had like a ton of different names I guess....He was saying Breakaway or something. So we came up with Breakthrough cuz its a cool name and it kinda describes what our purpose is for spiritual breakthrough.
Cynthia: Who are some of your musical influences?
Eric: I can speak for Garth, Kevin and Willy--Justified.
Garth: Yeah, we have a lot of influences, but Justified, thats a big band out of here. They're out of our same city we live in, Chandler, and they're kind of like mentors to us. They help us out and we look up to them.
Cynthia: They're another Christian band?
Garth: Yeah.
Cynthia: As far as the "scene" goes, have you noticed that there are more Christian bands than non-Christian bands in this area?
Garth: Yeah, theres a pretty good scene here. I think the level of quality and even quantity of Christian bands next to secular bands out here is pretty much even.
Cynthia: Yeah, I've noticed that too.
Willy: I'd like to say, for like a starting out Christian band, theres a lot more people open to it. As opposed to like a secular band, you have to play like bars for like the first two years. Like, the whole community is more open to you playing and they're just nice about it and sincere. And you can play at any church too.
Garth: Especially being as young as we are, being a Christian band kinda helps out that cuz a lot of people, even though we're still in high school, they respect us for what we do, which is really cool because it means a lot to us.
Kevin: Youth groups and churches are a big help to us.
Willy: And so far, everyone has been a big help to us.
Cynthia: So you've only been together for seven months. So you're still new. What does the future hold for your band?
Garth: We want to make a lot of noise in the local scene and get a good fan base here and if that gets us recognition elsewhere, thats cool. Right now, we're just gonna rock while we can.
Cynthia: Have you toured outside Arizona?
Everyone in unison: We played San Diego once.
Cynthia: OK, well I can't think of any more questions, so any last comments?
Willy: Go check out Justified.
Garth: Thanks Cynthia, Nacho Cheese rules and so does Anarchy I guess.
