Benjamins "the Art of Disappointment" (Drive Thru Records)

You know, a lot of people compare Benjamins to bands like Weezer and say that they have that pop punk kind of quality with that almost synth sound mixed in, but honestly, I don't hear how this sounds like Weezer at all. It sounds like indie college kind of rock to me. In any case, it's far better than Weezer ever is or was.
One hard thing to overcome would be the vocals of this CD. They are not your standard sound, so while some times tolerable, they can also tend to be annoying and just overdone. So that may turn you off, but not me. I know all about being annoying.
Some of my favorite songs on here include "Couch", "Wonderful", "Sophia on the Stereo", "Dr. Frank Was Right", "Gave It Away" and "Little Tin Heart". If you didn't think there was enough hint of the Mr. T Experience with the title "Dr. Frank Was Right", check out the song called "Weather's Here, Wish You Were Beautiful", which is not a cover.
The lyrics are clever. "Wonderful" offers: "I'm your Einstein on acid, your superman if you will, if you would, I think you could do a lot worse than me". One of my favorite lines ever comes from "Little Tin Heart" which goes something like: "Maybe you think that I'm stoned, but I know what I'm saying. Suspend your disbelief in me, isn't it unbelieveable just how fucked up things can be?" To make it simplest- let's just say that you have to read this lyric booklet.
Drive Thru has really found a gem with the Benjamins. They don't sound like everything else on Drive Thru or everything else period. They're part of what's holding Drive Thru together, as a label, in my opinion.
