Marsyas was a satyr who
discovered the flute and
became quite intruiged by
it. He began to learn how
to play it, and became
rather good at it. He soon
became arrogant of his
newfound talent, and
challenged the god
Apollo (god of the arts,
etc. including music) to a
sort of musical contest,
stating that the loser was
at the mercy of the
winner. Apollo, of course,
won the contest, and thus
devised a gruesome
punishment. Marsyas was
flayed alive. It was said
that his blood and tears
collected and formed a
river which was named
after him.
