November's Girl

By Jessica Walter

There was a girl who lived across the street,
never did we have the chance to meet,
but I watched her day after day.
There she stood smoking at the top of her stairs,
icy wind blowing through her long red hair
her expression was so far away
She paid no attention to those who passed by
and in the dead of winter I had to wonder why
she would stand barefoot on the cold wood
Often I wondered what was on her mind
was her world really so unkind
was she so misunderstood?
I was certain and I was sure
she wanted someone to take care of her
I so much wanted to show her a better place
to take that look off her face
But I just sat here in this house of mine
and felt her shivers running down my spine
and though she's gone, finished her cigarette
I can't turn away just yet
I can't turn away just yet
