Euler and Bernoulli

Here are my girls in all their glory!

Most of the baby pictures of my girls show them on cedar bedding. I have since learned that both pine and cedar are toxic to small animals. Please click here to learn more about it. My ratties are now all kept on Carefresh (it's in Bunn's litterbox too!), which is made from reclaimed wood pulp that would otherwise have been sent to landfill, so it's good for the earth too!

Here's Bernoulli!

Bernoulli, also known as 'Noulli, Bernoodle, Noodle, Squishy, Fuzzbutt, and Buttfuzz, was born sometime in May of 1999. I don't know her exact birthday. I bought her from The Lucky Dog Pet Shop, in Berkeley. Please do not lecture me on pet shops! It is a small pet shop whose workers are knowledgeable and have been working there for a long time. They are kind to the animals and handle the rodents daily. My girls came to me the sweetest little things you could imagine.

'Noulli likes to run around our apartment like greased lightening. She also likes to sit on my shoulder to supervise my daily activities. When we ignore Noulli for too long, she opens her cage door and goes over to join us. We often return home at the end of a long day to find Noulli sitting on the kitchen counter waiting for us. She has grown to be such a well-behaved girl in terms of gnawing and bathroom habits that this doesn't bother us any more. And of course the opened cage door is no temptation to Euler, the quintessential home body!

'Noulli's favorite foods are butter lettuce, persimmons, goat cheese, avocado, and Milk Bones.

*Update*

After a long and courageous battle against myco/pneumonia, sweet, precious Noulli passed away on 12 December, 2000.

God saw you growing tired
and a cure was not to be,
so he put his arms around you,
and whispered, 'Come to me.'

A golden heart stopped beating,
hard-working paws at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
he only takes the best.

And here's Euler!

Euler, also known as Oily, Squishy, Fuzzbutt, and Buttfuzz, was born sometime in May of 1999. I don't know her exact birthday. I bought her from The Lucky Dog Pet Shop. Please do not lecture me on pet shops! For my explanation please see above.

Euler likes to run on her wheel, about 4-5 hours a night. She doesn't like to leave her cage and only hangs out with me when I stick my hand into the cage and press my face against the side. Oily was aptly nicknamed--when I try to grab her out of the cage against her will (which I do only when it needs to be cleaned) she slips out from between my fingers.

Euler's favorite foods are butter lettuce, grapes, persimmons, cheese, and dried pasta.

*Update*

Euler passed away very suddenly and peacefully in her sleep on 27 April 2001. She had just enjoyed her last yogurt drop, and left her face with an expression of perfect peace.

Goodbye angel Euler, until we meet again.
