Maintenance

The most important thing about dreadlocks is the maintenance (At least I believe so). You HAVE to keep them constantly maintained with back-combing and palm-rolling when you first get them. Well, at least I found that those methods were the best ways to keep my dreads from coming apart. You may find that yours will need either less or more maintenance, depending on the type of hair you have.

You will also find that your hair may or may not need wax to keep them together and looking good. Personally, I hardly ever wax my dreads out of personal preference. Only once in a while just to keep them smooth and non-frizzy, and to keep the lose hairs stuck into them.

You should also wash your hair as infrequently as possible when you have dreadlocks, as water loosens them up and thins them out drastically. But have no fear dreadheads, your hair WILL thicken out again!!! You should probably go without washing them for two weeks or longer (if you can tolerate going longer) and make that your personal hair washing regimen from now on. You can also go longer and longer each time if you wish, as you will be building up your hair's stamina of oil production (The longer you go, the less dirt and oil next time). In fact, I've built up my hair's stamina so much now that I can go for 6-7 weeks at a time without washing them.

Ya, don't make that face....they are perfectly fine. Sure, they don't smell like summer roses or shampoo mind you, but they don't smell bad either....just different.   =o) -   In fact, the only way that dreads smell is if you are deliberately putting something smelly in them... which I do not do. If you are around friends who smoke, it is advised to cover your dreads with a hat, as dreads suck in smells like a sponge.

The last thing I wanna talk about is dandruff, which burdens every fellow dreadhead. Just one more thing that comes with the territory. If it IS something you can absolutely NOT live with, then go to KnottyBoy.com and/or DreadHQ.com and go to their FAQs section and find out what you can do to abolish dandruff...there are ways.

Most of the above mentioned issues you will just come to live with, unless, of course you are a very meticulous person.

I hope these Tutorials gave you some knowledge and enlightenment about dreadlocks and hopefully cleared up any stereotypes and concerns you may have had about them.

Well kiddies, that's all for now...
HAPPY KNAPPING!!!
