The New York Yankees were formed in 1903, originally playing in Manhattan under the name "The Highlanders". They officially became the New York Yankees in April 1913, and their stadium, Yankee Stadium, opened in 1922. Since their formation, the team has featured many baseball legends, such as Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle, and has won 37 American League pennants as well as 26 World Series Championships.
Due to Babe Ruth's immense drawing power, the Yankees left the Polo Grounds, which they had shared with the New York Giants, and in 1922, they opened their season at the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Yankee Stadium is also known as "The House that Ruth Built", because it is Ruth who ultimately caused the need for the stadium.
Between 1973 and 1975, Yankee Stadium was renovated and modernized, and in 1976 the Yankees returned to the stadium after a 2-year stint at Shea Stadium.
Besides baseball, many other events have been held at Yankee Stadium, including concerts, boxing matches, and football.
