Sony & Toshiba to develop 45 nm Technology - 20 March 2004

Sony and Toshiba have announced that they will be collaborating in the development of highly advanced 45nm chips and design technologies for next-generation systems. The project will have a budget of 20-billion yen ($190 million) which is set for completion by late 2005, with the ultimate goal of being first to market the 45nm technology. Continued advances in digitization are fuelling demand for the new chip that combines increased miniaturization with enhanced functionality, faster operating speeds and lower power consumption. It is possible that Sony may utilise the 45 nm chip rather than the currently planned 65nm for the PS3, but this would require Sony's production process to speed up significantly in order to meet the estimated 2006 release.
