A storm hits Destiny Islands and Sora, Riku, and Kairi are separated. Sora finds the Keyblade and awakes in Traverse Town where he meets Donald and Goofy. He teams up with them to find his friends. He and his companions travel to many worlds and fight the Heatless. Sora finds Kairi at certain points in the game. He finds out that Riku gave his heart to the Darkness to save Kairi's heart. Sora also finds out that Riku is one of the Keyblade bearers. Sora ends up fighting Riku, but later finds out that Ansem was controlling his body. Sora fights Ansem to free Riku and the gate to Kingdom Hearts opens. Riku, Sora, Donald, and Goofy seal the door to Kingdom Hearts before the Heartless can escape. Riku and King Mickey stay in Kingdom Hearts to destroy the Heartless. At the end, Kairi returns to Destiny Islands without Sora. Sora, Donald, and Goofy look for King Mickey and Riku.
