well the first computer than most people know about is the eniac a football feild sized computer that took cookiecards with holes in it as input output devices. it didnt do much (well back then it did) compared to todays pc's computing over 1,000,000,000 calculations a second.
then along came bill gates with the idea of dos (i want nuthin to do with that man but i wont put him down on this site) he said we can revolutionize computers with dos and he did, the era of the terminal comuter was over. bill gates decided to call this operating system windows and thus a whole line of versions were made throught the years, however windows was not your best o/s windows 95-ME could not do networking very well and all of the versions crash too much. the rival to windows dring the 1990's was o/s2 it never crashed and it was cheaper the windows but soon windows dominated and ibm had to shut down the o/s2 faction.
windows now was almost alone if it wasnt for linus tourvold ( i think thats how its spelled), in a college project to make an operating system linus made linux (lie-nix [not lin-ux]) wich soon after being released to friends and the net became a world wide open source o/s that any one could edit. linux is now a very popular and well built software and its compleatly free for download. because linux is open source there are no holes for viruses to hack into because everyone fix the holes and made it next to perfect.
