Greece is a primarily mountainous country with the only flat land consisting of small coastal plains. The chains of mountains in Greece extend into the Mediterranean Sea, which make up the many clusters of small islands of Greece. The mountains which make up part of the Alpine Mountain System, travel northwest to southeast. They are the highest and most jagged mountain ranges in Greece, although the highest mountain, Mount Olympus, is located in east-central Greece.
Of the many mountain ranges in Greece, possibly the most beautiful is the Pindous Mountains, located in northern Greece. Mount Olympus, however, is not located within the Pindous Mountains.
Greece has many islands located off the coast of the mainland, formed when the mountains ranges in Greece travel into the ocean, creating a chain of islands. Only some of the islands located in Greece are:
Crete, the Dodecanese Islands, the Cylclades, the North East Aegean Islands, and many more. Some travel agencies in Greece offer cruises along the islands
