--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Husband and I and our two small children, ages 2 and 4 moved in to our new home in Hampton in 1972. It was a wonderful old cape, originally built in 1740 but redesigned into a Ducth colonial style home. As the old timers in the area said "they raised the roof".
Almost immediately, we began to notice odd noises that literally went bump in the night. My first day while unpacking, I heard a door slam in the home and went to investigate. All doors that had been open were open and all outside doors were still closed. I returned to packing. A few moments later the slam again! This time I knew it was the cellar door. But it was open. I was frightened just curious.

Over the next several days we all heard the slamming of the 'phantom' door but now we also heard footsteps from the kitchen area near the cellar door into the dining room, up the stairs towards the second floor bedrooms to the landing. There the footfalls stopped.

My 2 year old son insisted that THE MAN" would come into his room at night and look at him and we finally moved him across the hall into the guest bedroom which put an end to his complaints.

One weekend when my mother had come to visit she told me that the previous evening after she had gone to bed that she had heard the door downstairs open and close. She had thought it was my husband returning from a late night at work and had heard the footsteps across the house and up the stairs. She had seen a figure standing in her doorway and reached acroos the bed to turn on the light thinking my husband needed to talk to her. When she turned back noone was there. She settled back down only to hear the door and footsteps again. This time my husband came in and as he was passing the door my mother called out to ask him where he went. He was puzzled as he had just come in.

Relating this to me the following morning I had to tell her of our strange 'goings on'. There are several other occurences and actual sightings of this mysterious presence.

All in all though it was a pretty benevolent presence. There was never any real fear on the part of anyone experiencing'him' at our home. We have since moved and have often wondered what has since become of our host.
