A REPEAT OF 1994 IN THE VAUGHN

Riding stretches of 35-13 and 58-18, the Inwood Landfills have
propelled themselves within two games of the Wichita Whiffers
in the Vaughn division. These two teams staged a remarkable
pennant race last year, with Wichita beating out the Landfills
by two games en route to their third consecutive NASA crown.

This year, unlike last, it was the Whiffers who got off to a
scalding start, while the Landfills struggled early. But with
the insertion of David Wells (11-4) into the rotation, along
with Joe Sheehan's decision to abandon the five-man rotation,
Jason Grimsley and Bob Scanlan were no longer wreaking havoc on
the team ERA, and the wins mounted.

The Landfills and Whiffers play 11 times in Cluster 11, 11 games
that should decide the division. Winner may get a bye to the
second round, pending the success of the Yellowknife Moose. Loser
gets either the Mayne Islanders or Brussels/Kenmore survivor.

In that race, the Sprouts have ridden their "Sabes and Cone and
watch 'em run home" rotation to a three-game bulge over the
rudderless Knockers. Kenmore has struggled since manager Dave
Collins took a leave of absence, a leave which is now permanent
(see story below).

Joe Leonard's Tornados have blown through the league, and all but
wrapped up home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. In the
Davis, the Moose maintain a comfortable lead over the surging Islanders,
with the River Bandits having fallen off the pace.

Note that while many teams have all-but-clinched playoff spots, no one
has mathematically done so. Look for that to happen in the
next week or so.

If the playoffs began today:

Brussels @ Yellowknife
Mayne @ Inwood
Byes to Kansas City and Inwood

One other note: while the NASA road winning percentage had slipped
into the .420s, it is now back over .440. In my opinion, this is
a number which strongly indicates the quality of a league, and
the integrity of its members. .440 is quite respectable.

PLAYOFFS BEGIN SOON

In assembling your playoff 25-man rosters, due to the league office
by 9/15, note that pitchers are allowed 17% of their real-life
innings in each series, and batters 14% of their real-life ABs.
These percentages are strike-adjusted.

Does anybody know the major league rule for replacing injured players
in the playoffs? If someone is out for a series, or for the season,
can they be replaced immediately, or must it wait until after a given
series? I know that once removed from the roster, a player cannot be
added again.

FAREWELL

Dave Collins has informed the league that he will no longer continue
in his role as owner/manager of the Kenmore Knockers. Best wishes
to Dave in his endeavors, and here's an open invitation to return to
NASA when the time is right.

Go ahead and play all Knockers series as soon as is convenient.
Send all stats to Dave. He will be tallying them through the end
of the season.

A backup manager is currently deciding whether or not to take on
the Knockers, and should reach a decision shortly.

EXPANSION

Expansion draft 15-man lists will be due to the league office no
later than October 15th. Beginning October 15th, no player on
a protected list may be traded. Trades may continue up until
November 7th, at which time a roster freeze will occur until
just after the expansion draft.

I realize this is a tight timeframe for getting in your list, but
to give the new managers the best chance to evaluate the talent
available, this is the optimum date.

Note that lefty-righty splits, along with a compendium of other
information, are now available from Stats, Inc. at the ESPNet
World Wide Web site. The address is: http://espnet.sportszone.com.
Go into "Major League Baseball" and click on "The Players."

ROSTER EXPANSION

30-man rosters go into effect in Clusters 10 and 11.

TRADES

The following trades were consummated before the July 15th
dealine. Note that any trades made from now on go into
effect after the NASA Championship Series.

ILF sends Kevin Tapani to CRB for Jimmy Key and CRB rookie #8

ILF sends CRB rookie #7 to PPP for Phil Clark

ILF sends Phil Clark to CRB for Matt Nokes

WWH sends ILF rookie #6 to CPB for Juan Bell

An updated draft pick grid is located at the end of this newsletter.

Inwood is currently taking offers on the following players, seeking
draft picks or looking to package two or three players for one
impact player:

Jeff Conine	David Wells
Jim Leyritz	Jose Valentin
Jose Mesa	Dave Mlicki
B.J. Surhoff	Mel Rojas
Chris Haney	Paul Quantrill
Gernoimo Pena	Mike Fetters

Everybody but Cordero, Baerga and Griffey is available. Inquire at the 'fill.

PUSH IT REAL GOOD

Note that some teams have moved far ahead in games played. This is due to
an effort to finish Rany Jazayerli's season in time for him to
start med school in August without having Cluster 11 games to worry
about. As the end of the season draws near, feel free to send
instructions and play games ahead of schedule, particularly if you're
in a close playoff race.

While there have been one or two minor delays this summer, it has
easily been the smoothest of my three-year NASA tenure. Note that
we have completed just over 75% of the schedule, and no one is more
than a week behind. Kudos to the current crop of NASA managers
for their dedication this year!

That's it for this time. Good luck to all as we enter the homestretch!

				NASA Commissioner
