DRAFT RECAP

Looking back at the fateful evenings in February brings chills to
some, thrills to some, and in light of the lack of talent which
was available (do we all remember, "Geez. Thin draft?"), apathy
to most.

Nevertheless, here is a brief look at how some of the picks turned
out:

Round One:

1. Pedro Martinez, Cicely	No argument here. While Pedro has
struggled thus far in his NASA career
(7-11, 5.68), he was clearly the
class of the draft, and a firm cornerstone
in the Polar Bear rebuilding program.

2. Alex Rodriguez, Kenmore	Dave Collins selected the outstanding
young SS, then traded him to Mayne
				for Gregg Jefferies. His contributions
this year have been minimal, but expect
him to be a key cog for the Islanders
				into the 2000s.

3. Alex Gonzalez, Kenmore	The shortstop Collins kept has not been
able to unseat Mike Bordick yet, but
should supplant the veteran next year. A
				quality pick.

4. Will Clark, Baltimore	Looking to add a good offensive and
				defensive player, Bruce Hasch entered
NASA with this selection. While he has
enabled the Buttheads to move Mo Vaughn
to his natural position, DH, there is
some question as to how much longer Clark
has, and his role in the Buttheads future.

5. Rusty Greer, Yellowknife	Greer has struggled to get playing time
in the Moose's deep outfield, but has
played well when given the chance (.319/
.411/.581), and looks to be the starting
				RF in 1996.

6. Deion Sanders, Prospect Park	Deion has been the best hitter on the
Posse this year (.300), and provided
good defense in CF. Along with Chad
Curtis, will be part of an effective
				CF platoon in 1996.

7. Armando Benitez, Mayne	Benitez has spent the year at AAA Nova
Scotia, putting up stellar numbers. Some
question his ability to make the adjustment
to NASA play, however. Still, a fine young
arm in a draft shy of them.

8. Jeff Cirillo, Prospect Park	Kenny Gelfand's second of three first-round
picks has played well in limited time. His
stellar glovework around third has pleased
management, and he projects as at least a
				part-time starter in 1996.

9. Sid Fernandez, Wichita	A rare bust for Rany Jazayerli. El Sid has
not thrown an inning for the Whiffers this
year, and is not a candidate for the 1996
rotation. The biggest bust of the first round.

10. Chad Ogea, Prospect Park	Ogea has been beaten about the head and
shoulders in 2 NASA starts (0-2, 17.25), but
the Posse remains excited about his potential,
and views him as a #2 starter for the
				next five years. We agree.

11. Vincente Palacios, Muncie	Steve Bonek gambled on this journeyman right-
hander who stumbled on a good year in 1994.
His performance this year (2-6, 5.33) says
it all about this soft-tosser, who may
be lost in the expansion draft.

12. Chuck McElroy, Brussels	Jim Satrape firmed up his bullpen with
this pick taking the best left-hander in
the draft. He has been effective, posting
five wins and two saves as Brussels duels
with Kenmore for the Hobbs wild-card.

Round Two:

The standout picks here were Jeff Brantley to Yellowknife at 18,
after some projections had him going as high as 5, and Gabe
White to Prospect Park at 23.

Round Three:

Mayne Island's selection of OF Garret Anderson at 25 and Brussels
nabbing of Dave Leiper (2.40 ERA in 15 IP) at 36 highlighted this round.

Round Four:

Cedar Rapids grabbed Kevin Jarvis, promising right-handed starter,
at 37, and Cicely picked up Luis Sojo, who continues to hit .280,
at 38.

Round Five:

Cicely makes the steal of the draft at 50, taking Eddie Murray, who's
hit parade shows no signs of stopping yet. Kenmore also made a very
nice pickup, taking Pete Schourek at 51.

Round Six:

A weak round. Cedar Rapids' selection of Mark Lewis at 61 is the
only pick of note.

Round Seven:

With some teams dropping out at this point, the highlights were as
strong as in any round. Inwood's Bob Patterson (73), Cicely's
Jaime Navarro (74) and Prospect Park's Jorge Fabregas (75) and
Mike Henneman (78) all projecting as contributors in 1996.

Round Eight:

Cedar Rapids and Kansas City closed the draft strong with Sean Bergman
at 87 and Otis Nixon at 89, respectively.

Taken as a whole, it was the weakest draft in memory, mostly due to
the strike. 1996 shapes up as a monster draft, however, one in which teams'
fates could be shaped for years to come.
