Another
two disappionting displays
Men's U/16 League: Aloysians
- University (26-11)
University were no match to the superior Aloysians who displayed
some good flowing handball. Colin Sammut's boys were determined from
the very beginning to take home all three points. Aloysians rapidly
got off the grid and found themselves leading by 17-5 at half time.
In the second half however, Aloysians seemed to slow down the pace,
allowing a feeble reaction by University who showed courage till the
very end. Philip Mifsud was Aloysians top scorer with 6 goals while
Daniel Dimech hit 5 for University.
Men's Promotion League: University - La Salle
Piatnik (16-34)
This wasn't to be a good University day as the men's
promotion team failed to challenge a fine La Salle Piatnik. La Salle
started fast in the first 14 minutes when they where leading 1-14.
After this impressive break, Gilbert Micallef got injured and series
of accidents happened during the first half. La Salle's coach Alan
Grima also got red carded.
In the second half La Salle kept their goal scoring rhythm constant
and kept on increasing their lead. University also had a good break
towards the end of the match where they found La Salle's rearguard
unprepared. Andrew Said was La Salle's top hit-man with 14 goals.

Bad
moment for University Men Team
Women's
League: Kavallieri - University (20-6)
Reigning champions Kavallieri kept up the pressure on current leaders
WA Vitality following a comfortable victory over University.
Stephan Vancell's University should be commended for the improvement
they are showing from game to game. During their last games they have
always managed to fight bravely during the first period. However,
they tend to succumb to their opponents during the second half.
In fact, Kavallieri found it quite difficult to penetrate their opponents'
compact defence during the first moments of the game. As time went
by, Kavallieri, ably managed by Ulrika Davis, settled down and by
half time they were leading 9-4.
The second half was completely dominated by Kavallieri who almost
scored at will with Ulrika Davis hitting six goals followed by Johanna
Rizzo who managed five goals. On the other hand, University's best
scorers were Yanika Desira and Jenny Mizzi who scored two goals each.
Men's Championship League: University - Aloysians
Prominent (15-18)
Once again the University side loose out to Aloysians. Despite having
prolific scorer Roberto Ragonesi missing, Aloysians still managed
to grab all three points from this encounter.
In fact, Aloysians had the better start but gradually University
started improving their performance.
The beginning of the second half saw University stage a serious comeback
to the extent that on more than one occasion they managed to narrow
the gap to just one goal. However, with fifteen minutes to go, Aloysians
were enjoying a 14-11 lead.
But near the end Dennis Zammit was sent of after retaliating for
unpunished viscious challenges by the opponents, University's task
was even more difficult as by the stroke of time Aloysians were to
cling on to their top position.

Men's
Promotion League
La Salle Danone - University (28-19)
La Salle stormed to a very early lead as the University side
started in a slow manner. In fact University missed two crucial
penalties. As the minutes ticked away La Salle continued to
dictate matters as it was clear that University were struggling
to stop their opponents' fury so much so that it took them ten
minutes to score their first goal.
However, towards the end of the first half University stepped
up their efforts and in fact they managed to narrow their disadvantage
to six goals, 14-8.
On the resumption, La Salle, managed by Chris Kenely, maintained
their lead as University did their best to reduce the gap further.

Defeats for University teams
Men's U/16 League: University
- La Salle Danone (11-45)
La Salle Danone started the new year in the same emphatic
manner they ended their 2002 commitments. In fact, following their
huge 52-1 victory over St. Martin's Cavaliers, this time round the
La Salle boys proved too strong for the University team, managed
by Joe Tanti.
Chris Kenely's side were off to a flying start as they
roared off to a 12-0 lead which increased to 23-3 by half time. La
Salle continued to dictate matters during the second period with none
less than nine players listing their names among the scorers. Stefan
Desira was University's top marksman after notching five goals.
Women's League: Wild Angels Vitality - University
(19-4)
John Falzon's WA Vitality secured their fourth consecutive win to
maintain their 100% record as they now lead the standings on twelve
points.
However, it was far from plain sailing during the first period as
the University team, managed by Stephan Vancell, were determined not
to give away an inch. In fact, by half time they limited their opponents'
damage to a limited five-goal lead.
Upon the resumption, the WA Vitality players looked a transformed
side as they changed gear and swept away past their opponents as the
latter could not cope with the fast break strategy adopted by WA Vitality.
At the end, it was a more than merited victory for Wild Angels. Maria
Falzon was their top scorer on six goals followed by Yvonne Barry
who scored five. University's goals were scored by Davida Degiorgio,
Jenny Mizzi, Rosette Mattocks and Daniela Bezzina.
Men's Championship League: La Salle Nespak -
University (26-18)
A determined La Salle side grabbed full points from this encounter
to end their first round commitments in second place on four points,
three points below current league leaders Aloysians.
Alan Grima's La Salle got off to a good start however as time went
by University got more into the thick of the action as they managed
to equalise and started to offer a much better opposition.
However, towards the end of the first half they were very unlucky
to lose the services of utility player Dennis Zammit following a gruesome
injury.
During the first minutes of the second half University did keep the
pace however within a few minutes from 12-12 La Salle shrugged off
to a 19-12 lead. University did try to get back into the game however
by that time the match had already been won and lost.
Chris Kenely was La Salle's top scorer on nine goals followed by
current Player of the Year Andrew Said, who scored seven goals. On
the other hand, University's best scorers were Joseph Tanti, Dennis
Zammit and Orlando Bonnici, who scored five goals each.

Aloysians
Prominent - University (14-17)
In a close contest, Aloysians took the upper hand
in the final minutes when they surged in the lead. The first half
saw both teams on the lookout as the half time score was only 6-5.
The second half was a bit more spectacular where the
score-line was 12-12. Both teams struggled to get the upperhand
of the game, but in the end Aloysians took the upper hand and won
over a good University side. They won 14 to 17

Narrow
Defeats for youth teams
Last
Saturday the females Under 18 team had their first match of the season
and the males Under 17 had their second game of the legue.
In
what was a dull game the females team lost 6 goals to 4 to Kavallieri.
The team made several mistakes and had many opportunities lost. Although
this was to be an Under 18's match Kavallieri played with some key
players of their senior team. But one cannot put the blame there since
the team did not perform well.
Then
the Under 17 narrowly lost by 1 goal to LaSalle B. Both teams were
playing head to head for most of the game, shifting the advantage
from one side to another. At one point the University boys were going
to close the encounter as their advantage grew but at the end of the
match their pace slowed down (since most players played a full match
due to an almost empty bench) and LaSalle started gaining until they
took the one goal advantage whcih closed the encounter.
The
Club's X'mas Dinner

Great
Determination By Mens' Team
Last
Saturday the mens' senior team played against Kavallieri in what
was a very tense game. Muhc was expected from both sides but in
the end the most determined team won the match by a 7 goal margin.
All in all it was a merited victory for Ronald Zammit's
side as his players were more determined. On the other hand, following
their great win over La Salle, much more was expected of Julian Xuereb's
Kavallieri.
The first period was quite a balanced affair but a counterbreak
goal from Dennis Zammit right on the stroke of time gave University
a 12-10 lead by half time.
Minutes into the second period, University had key player
Joseph Tanti sent off. At such a stage one might have thought that
University were in deep trouble however this was not the case as all
players showed greater spirit and conviction.
In fact, gradually they managed to pull away from
their opponents despite the latter's unsuccessful attempt to get back
into the game.

Teams in Action on the Day
In
the first game the U17 lost to Kavallieri after a disappointing display.
Coach Joseph Tanti had high expectations for this game but it seemed
that the lack of experience and confidence overwhelmed the team. The
match could have gone either way although Kavallieri always showed
they were a step ahead. In fact, at half time they were leading 8-6.
Steve Camilleri was Kavallieri top scorer
as he scored thirteen of his side's goals. But one should note the
effort done by Stefan Desira (University's best scorer) as he scored
nine goals.
Then
the females' team came into action The game had a rather quiet start
as by half time Aloysians were only leading with a six goal advantage,
8-2. In fact, University managed to net their first goal after fourteen
minutes. Play resumed at a faster pace during the second period
and it was at this stage that Aloysians started moving rapidly towards
thier victory. Roslyn Debattista, was her side's top scorer with
eight goals while Stephanie Camilleri and Sandra Farrugia scored
four goals each. University's Alexia Nappa and Jenny Mizzi scored
a brace each.
Then
in the last game the U19-Promo team gave way ti their first victory
of the season after beating Kavallieri with a 5 goal advantage. the
team performed well but still needs to improve since they lost various
chances in attack.University, inspired by some fine play by Kevin
Casaru who netted seven goals, had the better start and up to half
time they were enjoying a five-goal cusion, 12-7. During the second
period Kavallieri tried their best to get back into the game and despite
having Stephen Spiteri and Ian Camilleri scoring six goals each this
was to no avail as University kept a firm grip on the proceedings
to go on and claim their first three points of the campaign.

Championship League:
Aloysians
Prominent - University
University
deserved something better in this game but they lost their first
game of the season to Aloysians
University
were the better team during the first period and in fact at one
stage they opened up a four goal advantage, 10-6. However, Aloysians
gradually started to improve their play mainly thanks to some fine
play by Roberto Ragonesi and player coach Milos Stanislejevic. In
fact, by half time they were only trailing by one goal, 12-11.
Upon
the start of the second half, the Aloysians players showed more
determination in their play and once they obtained the draw and
later went ahead there was no stopping them.
Undoubtedly,
University were no pushovers as they stretched their opponents till
the final moments of the game however ultimately there efforts were
to no avail.
Dennis
Zammit was University's top scorer with nine goals while Orlando
Bonnici notched four goals. On the other hand, Aloysians' Roberto
Ragonesi hit nine goals while Stanislejevic and Matthew Delicata
scored five goals each.

Females
Show Great Signs of Improvements
Men's
team loose out to LaSalle
Early
in the afternoon the female's gave a good performance against the
Kavallieri and then later in the day the men's team lost to LaSalle
which ended their hopes of winning the ZeusSports Cup.
After
a good preformance in a midweek friendly tournament in which the
team came second, the University players showed once more that they're
improving game by game. The first half ended 6 goals to 1 in favour
of the Kavallieri. In the second half the team came out more determined
and were unlucky in hitting the post at least 8 times apart from
having two goals dissallowed. Altohugh the score ended up 4-15 to
the Kavallieri, this score does not reflect how the game was played
since the University team kept the pressure on their opponents and
had a very good game.
Follwing
the victory over Aloysians the male's team hoped that they could
win the ZeusSports cup. But it wasn't to be so. In the first twenty
minutes of the game LaSalle took control of the match against a
sloppy University defence which gave way to a six goals advantage
to the opponents. In the second half the team looked like they were
going to try to comeback once more but each time the deficit was
reduced, the defence gave way to LaSalle. In the end the team lost
23-29 and so lost the chance to win the Zeus Sports Cup which was
one by Aloysians.

A
Win over Aloysians
MUHC vs Aloysians (21-20)
After
last week's disappointing start to the Zeus Cup with a draw against
Methode, the University Men's team gave the surprise of the week
by beating Aloysians against all the odds.
In
the first few minutes it seemed that Aloysians were going to pour
a shower of goals on the opponents. In fact the first half ended
with a seven goal difference in favour of the Aloysians.
But
during the half time coach Ronald Zammit must have done his work
for in the second period a whole new team came out of the dressing.
The University players showed determination and started to close
in on the opponents. The victory arrived thanks to not only Dennis
Zammit who was the man of the match but to all the team. All the
players showed that they have the skill to play against last years
Champions.

Season
starts for both senior teams
On
saturday both the male and the female senior teams started their
season. The females lost to Wild Angels by 20 goals to 2. While
the males team managed to get a draw of 19 goals all against Methode
Electronics.
At
2:00 pm in the afternoon the females team gave great signs of improvment
against the wild angels team. The two teams remained goaless for
the first seven minutes but the wild angels proved to be stronger
against an organised defence since they only scored from fast breaks.
The first half ended at the score of 9 goals to nill. In the second
half the MUHC team returned with greater determination to at least
score and at last the team scored two goals from Eleonor Farrugia
and Rosette Mattocks. After the game both the coach and the assistant
coach were both satisfied with the team improvements especially
in defence.
Later
in the day the men seniors team played against Methode Electronics.
What seemed to be an easy game turned out to be a difficult challenge
as the adversaries showed some grit. The MUHC team went seven goals
to one ahead but the opponents soon started to catch up due several
defensive errors. In the second half the team started with better
determination but soon the performance started to decline and in the
end it seemed that the team could loose the game in the final minutes.
But the game ended at a 19 all draw. After the match coach Ronald
Zammit was a bit disappointed since he expected a better results.
He also expects a better performance in the upcoming matches.

Friendly for the Men's Team
MUHC vs De La Salle (29-26)
The
first friendly of the MUHC's men's team was played on the 3rd of
October 2002. The battle against De La Salle was tough but fortunately
MUHC managed to win the game by always being one goal or two ahead.
In the first 3 minutes De La Salle was ahead with two goals but MUHC
soon caught up by scoring a lot of fast breaks and in the first half
the score was 13-11 in favour of MUHC. Dennis and Joseph Tanti scored
8 goals each while Daniel (U19) was a surprise for the team when he
managed to score 4 goals. Stephan Vancell the goalkeeper helped his
team by being always on his toes and making some nice saves. This
not being enough for him, at one point he played along with his fellow
players by going onto the court (half court!) The team showed a strong
performance and gained more confidence in the second half to end the
game as winners. When
interviewed, Ronald (the team'scoach) said that he was very happy
with the team's performance and said that they had been training hard.
However one could see that there is still room for improvement and
that he will be also expecting the team to improve certain tactics.

Friendly for the Female's Team
On
the 20th of September the female's team had their first friendly
against Wild Angels. During the first period Coach Stephen Vancell
fielded the following players: Josephine Gauci Between the posts,
Bernice Cardona, Jenny Mizzi, Rosette Mattocks, Dana Ben Moussa,
Davida DeGiorgio and Domenique Gauci and they gave a
brave
performance keeping the score to 5-2. But in the initial stages
of the second period the centre of the team felt ill and the team
started to suffer several goals. Vancell started trying a lot of
the players so that they would gain some experience at playing handball.
The game ended at the score of 30-2 in favour of the opponents.
After the match coach Stephen Vancell said that he was satisfied
with the team's performance since it was their first official friendly
most of the players have only started training in the last couple
of months and with the pre season only ending las
t
week. He
continued by saying that during the first 20min session he fielded
some experienced players and till the last three minutes of the
period the score was still 2-2. But after losing the only centre
player in the team, the latter could not find the right balance
and gave way to the opponents. Overall the team gave good signs
that they were improving and that during the next month they will
be training harder so that better results can be achieved in the
next matches.

appointed for next season
The
Computer Domain men's senior team coach was confirmed for another
year, after managing well last season which was very turbulent to
our club. Currently, Coach Ronald Zammit is managing the FISEC Maltese
handball team, which is participating in the Interamnia Cup in Italy.
Later in July, the FISEC team will participate in the FISEC games
which will be held in Malta. The club hopes that under his guidance,
MUHC's senior men's team will perform well next season.
Furthermore, Nursery Coach Mark Farrugia has resigned from the post
in the committee and as a coach due to personal academic reasons.
The club has appointed MUHC Female Coach Joseph Tanti as Nursery coach
for this coming season. Assistant coach of the female team, Coach
Stephan Vancell was promoted to the vacant post.

April 2002 Doubled
Joy for Coach Ronald Zammit
A
few minutes before the beginning of the crucial match between Aloysians
Prominent and Our team Computer Domain, coach Ronald Zammit phoned
the team's President Stephan Vancell that his wife had given birth
to a baby boy.
Instead
of Ronald Zammit, on the bench stood Stephan Vancell and he had the
following player's at his disposal: Stephan Vancell, Johan Siggesson,
Orlando Bonnici, David Cini, Mark Farrugia, Dennis Zammit, Stefan
Riolo, Stephen Cilia, Kevin Casaru, Brendan Cascun, Joe Tanti. Coach
Ronald Zammit obviously did not show up since his wife was giving
birth.
The
team played a great game and score-wise they were always in front
of their opponents. They kept calm during the whole game and they
only started to suffer when in the last 15 minutes Aloysians Prominent
went man- on- man. Johan Siggessson played instead of Stephan Vancell
between the posts and he played a great game, making some great saves.
Congratulations
to coach Ronald Zammit and to the team for winning this crucial match.

March 2002 Men
B- Computer Domain Vs Aloysians
Much
was expected of this clash, especially after its previous installment.
After storming off to an early lead, the Aloysians were kept in check
by Computer Domain, who also managed to gnaw at the deficit. The two
defenses were clearly on top during the first half, and goals did
not come as often as expected. The young Brendan Cascun gave a solid
performance throughout the match, showing increased proficiency, especially
in defence. His goals also contributed to his team's positive first
session, after which they were trailing by a pittance at 5-7.
Early
in the second half the two sides matched each other almost goal for
goal. However, Alec Invernizzi, recently back from injury, hit a fine
spell and started scoring almost at every attempt. The wounded giant's
string of goals gave the Aloysians a good cushion, which they rode
to final victory.
