THE ROCK OF ETERNITY

                                                      Because "The Sons of The dead earth claim" terra as their home planet and Imperial law allows no chapter to settle on earth, the Sons at founding made their base on an ancient fortress once part of earths defence system. The huge towering rock has powerful but slow engines allowing it a degree of movement and an ability to use the warp in the same fashion as the Ramillies fortresses. "The rock" as the chapter refer to it, is a stark , heavily armed home for the chapter.  Bristling with weapons batteries, lances, bombard cannon, torpedoes and a launch ability for hordes of thunderhawks the rock is the core of the marines fleet a secure base when the going gets tough.

                             The Rock of Eternity is a lasting monument to the heights scaled by man at the apex of the age of technology. The rock some 5km long by 6km wide and 8 kms high is a triumph of faith and engineering. On the fall of man it was abandoned in earths orbit and left silent till it was  reoccupied in M29 with the founding of the Sons of the dead earth as they entered the emperors service. The rock has saved the chapter on many occasions and acted as a final refuge when outnumbered and beleaguered. The rock has never fallen. For many years it was stationed in the Asgard sector where it recruited a large number of native Asgardians into the chapters ranks. The ancestry of the Asgardians is basically Nordic and it is this that gives the marines their cold , blonde haired, blue eyed physical characteristics. 

                           The chapter and of course the rock were consigned in M39 to the Golgotha sector to deal with the not infrequent heretical rebellions. The fearless and cold blooded manner in which the bio engineered supermen carried out their calling has made them both feared and hated by the inhabitants of the sector. 

                          The rock is currently sited in the Eden's rib system where the chapter is charged with the defence of the warp gate/rift that connects Golgotha prime to Shalom.

The rock has 3 fire arcs. Assume a clockwise  360 degree arc with 0 degrees being directly forward. The arcs described would be

Port fire arc  270 to 45 degrees

starboard arc 315 to 90 degrees

Forward arc 315 to 45 degrees.

Can move 0 to 5 or turn. It may not both move and turn in the same phase. for movement purposes it ignores blast markers  and the effects of crippling.
Can only use BFI or reload special orders. 
Torpdedo salvos can be fired in different directions
May fire boarding torpedoes and as they are space marines will have +1 on their hit and run attacks
Bombardment cannons fire as weapons batteries but always hit on a 4 or more regardless of armour even ordnance
Bombardment cannons inflict criticals on rolls of 4 or more

NOTE:_ The rock is immensely powerful. It has 60/24 wbs, 60/8 lances, 45/8 bombard cannon and 12 torpedoes in the front arc.

The model

                  This is a project I have wanted to undertake ever since seeing White dwarf images of marine fortresses many years ago. In order to make the fortress look like part of the rock, I built the fortress model first and then built the rock around it using layers of polyfoam ceiling tiles. It is of course completely scratchbuilt using only turrets from both BFG kits and other naval kit manufacturers.
