Stereo3D-Panorama

What is?

Stereo3D: Not a projection of images of two opposite sides, or 6 sides of a cube. Not VRML. Simply to view an image, video or game with LCD shutter glasses. These glasses have no small display of the image, they only change between black and transparent. The monitor displays alernatively the image for the right eye (the shutter will black out the left eye) and for the left eye (the shutter will black out the right eye). Special monitors are also available, but quality isin discussion.

Panorama = Environment Maps = Image Array: Like a photo printout panorama, but it’s always 360° and the endes are connected to each other. You can display it on a monitor and pan around, not recognizing the begin and end of the panorama, thus it’s called immersive image. In ideal case you can also look up till 90° and look down till –90°. It’s stitched together by panorama stitching software either of 2 or 3 fisheye images or one ore more rows of normal images (5-15 images each row). Different formats are used, either one big image in a special projection (spherical, cylindrical) or 6 images for the sides of a cube (Quicktime format), both producing similar quality.

Vergleich Model-Based-Rendering and Image-Based-Rendering (German, Powerpoint)

Pano-Show: clickable panos or geographical maps (similar to HTML image maps), which link to other panos   Examples: Sparrenburg Parramatta Stadium

Pano Slide-Show: timed displaying panos, usally autorotating   Example: 01digintale dimension go to "Projecte", "Immobilien", "Facility Managment" and click on one of the two “HSG”-icons

Animated Pano:

·         Panos with Flash animations   Example Sydney Opera House, Undersea

·         Panos with inserted normal videos   Exaples: Cinema 1 2 3 4 5, Porsche-Window, Game Level "Varyx": Go to Anartillian

Pano-Video:

1.      Movement Pano: think about making photos clockwise (or with scanner camera) and there is a movement you captured   Flash Movies Viewer $ 50,- or Quicktime Movies Quicktime FAQ, QT Techinics, QT Links or Mike Carambat’s AVR Player
Disadvantage: Difficult to link the two ends of the pano because of time difference

2.      Immersive Movie: think about a rolling game demo where you can loock around but cannot move, instead you have a fixed movement like using a movie camera on invisable rails   Article: Immersive Media    OnSite Link

Overview of Panorama Modes and File Formats: PanopticVision, PT Viewer, SIGGRAPH

  1. Cylindrical: 1 image
  2. Spherical: 1 image compressed in vertical
  3. Movie: short film with manual forwareds/backwords control  Formats: QuickTime or Flash  Advantage: Movement Pano possible
  4. Cubic: 6 images  Advantage: Same resoultion in evry direction  Disadv: Real Time Wrapping

Overview of Stereo3D Modes and File Formats: Dr. Clauss  3-Qubed  White Paper1  White Paper2

  1. Interlaced Mode =: WINx3D, 3-Qubed
  2. Line Blanking Mode: 3-Qubed
  3. Page Flip Mode = Frame sequential stereo: Neotek  Above and Below Formats or Side by Side Format: JPS
  4. Raster Interlace Mode: Neotek
  5. Sync Doubling Mode: Neotek
  6. Analglyph Red-Blue Mode: Software

Stereoscopic Viewing: Normal stereo viewing to get a 3D effect with near objects looking near extending till the background.

Pseudoscopic Viewing: This is the effect you get when you direct the left eye to the right eye's image and the right eye to the Left eye's image (NOT the same as cross eyed viewing). All the depth cues become reversed. It's an erie optical effect where familiar objects appear to turn inside out. Pseudoscopic and Stereoscopic images or viewing can be used to identify which image is Left or Right.

Identification of the viewing: Use two different images with letters “L” and “R” or similar, use a stereo image where you know which part is near and which far or try this: The right eye sees further past the left edge than will the left eye. And the Left eye sees farther past the right edge than the right eye. Examine the distant parts of a stereo picture near the side edges to look for signs of this difference, called parallax.

Hyper stereo: Anything with intercamera distance bigger than the human eye distance (6.5 cm). Hyperstereoscopy is more suitable for HMD than for normal shutterglasses visualization

Depending on the Mode Stereo3D images can bei stored either in normal image formats (Analglyph) or in specials stereo formats (interlaced mode):

JPS: JPEG Stereo Format, an image in this format constists of two images beside of each other.   Example1, Example2
If you have two images 640 by 480 pixels in size, the JPS file will be 1280 by 480 pixels in size.
You can open them, but for stereoscopic viewing you need special drivers (Nvidia) or displaying porgrams.

PNS: Same for Portabel Networks format PNG.

BMS: Same for Windows BMP format.

VRR: Propriarity VRex Container File for DepthCharge-Viewer. Can be a still image or a motion video file.

CrossEye – ParallelEye: A correct JPS/PNS/BMS image has the right view left and the left view right! Nevertheless there are some tools which produce parallel arranged JPS files. The ELSA and ASUS capture tools are doing so!

Beamers/Projectors: See also this discussion

LCD:

DLP:

CRT:

All can be used for polarized glasses, only CRT-projectors for shutter glasses. In the projector section you can read about different results with DLP projectors. Avoid LCD/TFT projectors.

The reason lcds are too slow isn't because of the 60hz value. It's because the lcds still glow slightly even after the power has hit them. With shutter glasses, you get instant ghosting because as the new frame is being drawn, the old frame is still partly visable. It's nice in the fact that it keeps lcds from flickering when veiwed normal, but it stops shutter glasses from working with them. Some lcds can fade the pixels faster then others and don't have the ghosting problem but I'm not certain which ones can handle it.

Abstract:

It is a pitty that they use for this images one typical stupidity - compressing interlaced images as JPEG. JPEG use YUV quantization efectively averignig values from odd an even lines together ... The quality is horribly down as the result ...

1.      Device to use 2 normal projectors  Panoram

2.      DepthQ Stereoscopic Projector NTSC/PAL and Software  $ 1,900.-  Extreme system requirements (XP, 2200GHz, Quadro)
It uses progressive page flipping for active shutter glasses or utilize a dual pipeline for projected passive displays. Support also for still stereoscopic image visualization (JPG, BMP). Chris Ward told me, that the DepthQ software does not do panormaic images.

Shutter glass sytems don't work with LCD projectors because they are too slow. What part of the system is too slow? One thought I had was that most LCD projectors are locked a 60Hz. This means that each eye gets the equivilant of 30Hz and this is too slow. The only other meaning I could think of for too slow was that the LCD pixels fade too slow after being strobed and therefore are very ghosted.

What ever the signal is coming into the LCD there is a small delay from the point of input to the point of output.

the processor in the glasses has no noticable delay and flickers at a rate ofset from the LCD projector.

This is my thought I maybe totaly wrong but I believe that if you could adjust the delay timing in the shutter glasses the same signal could be used for the glasses as well the projector.

Someone else told me, he gets 3D. On a 70" x 70" screen and sitting about 3 metres from the screen, images project out about 2 metres and in about 2 metres. The flicker is not that noticeable.

It is theoretically impossible to extract perfect 3-D information from existing 2-D content. However, with diverse theories and patent pending algorithms, eDimensional has succeeded in converting 2-D content into a feeling of depth and immersion in real time. This algorithm performs precise analysis on image sequences to extract movement between the images. From this motion type analysis, it determines which direction the camera or object moves, and provides pertinent depth feeling to each objects in the image by using this information. This algorithm can convert the image with not only the movement in left, right, up and down direction, but also in very fast movement or no movement at all.

Try PNG instead of jpeg. Or convert to a stereo pair. For best quality, take the raw screengrab and save it to png..

Interlaced JPEG ... JPG=YUV 4:2:2 quantization = mixing colors from 2 surounding lines. You shuld try to separate such jpeg back to 2 independent images to see what are you doing. So don’t do this!

1.      First of all, the driver supports T&L hardware accelerated games, which are bound by the hardware, and there is no way to change some of the settings, which are calculated in the GPU. The 3D hardware does not permit change while working, so T&L games are mostly WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). How do I know if it's a T&L game? Check next question.

2.      The second issue to consider is the time needed to press the keys, some games take longer than you expect, for instance: Convergence: 5-10 seconds. Front/Back Plane: 10 secs or longer is some cases.

3. Stereo3D Panorama:

Most Hard- Software and Tutorials from the Panorama and Stereo3D Image sections can be used.

            a) Stereo3D Pano Creation

Creation differs very much, what source you have. Rendered images like computer game screenshot are captured in JPS format and can be stiched and edited furtheron.

Hardware:

Background article to stereo slit cameras & Great White Paper:
For stereo panoramas we use a camera having two slits: one slit on the right and one slit on the left. The slits, which move together with the camera, form a single cylindrical image surface just like a single slit. The two projections obtained on this shared cylindrical image surface are exactly circular projections. Therefore, the two panoramic images, obtained by the two slits, enable stereo perception in all directions.

Stereo panoramas can be created with video cameras in the same manner as with slit cameras, by using vertical image strips in place of the slits. In regular manifold mosaicing, each image contributes to the mosaic a strip taken from its center. Stereo mosaicing is very similar, but each image contributes two strips. Two panoramas are constructed simultaneously. The left panorama is constructed from strips located at the right side of the images, giving the left-eye circular projection. The right panorama, likewise, is constructed fromstrips located at the left side of the images, giving the right-eye circular projection.

1.      Karline Digital Stereoscopic Panorama Camera    EUR 5,800.- (incl. Karline Studio & shutter glasses, laptop needed)
Karline = Ka
mera with a rotaing Linearsensor.
Karline (Line Camera = Scanner Camera) and Karline Studio (editing- and publishing-software).
Vertical angle: until 90°, because of its extra vertical angle adjustment (incline from -30° bis +50°) of the visual axle in 10° steps it is possible to record the sourrounding area on a complete sphere.
Min. Recording time per full-circle image: 20 s - 30 s
For stereoscopic pictures an adapter is used.
Download free Karline Viewer (planned for
Active X, Plug ln, Direct X), a demo of Karline Studio or free StereoStripes, a program to prepare a stripe-image from two pictures, which can used by holographic film, and so on.
The Panorama Gallerey has an online viewer and uses
anaglyphic method. You need only red/green- or red/blue glasses known from various magazines or buy them here for € 5.0

2.      SLIVR Scanner Camera  3 x 8000px, vertical FOV 48° up to 180° (with fisheye lens)  $ 9,500.- (high speed USB cable, captures on notebook)
System Requirements and Lenses
The only drawback I could see to their setup was that it was slow, so basically only good for still images.

3.      Nu-View  SX-2000 Stereo3D Camcorder Adapter    $ 250.-
Information at The unofficial Nu-View page. Buy at i-glasses.
These System is for A Stereo3D-Video, but usable for stills.
You need a camcorder of traditional “Handycam” shape, to mount the adapter!
Disadvantage: Not the resolution of a digital photo camera. For panorama shooting not ideal, because camera rotation is not in the center.

4.      2 identical cameras (any type) and Kaidan QuickPan Stereo Dual Camera Bracket  $ 430,-  Tutorial: Illinois State Museum
Dual Camera (photo, video) Stereo Mounting Bracket  $ 195.-

5.      Simultan capturing around
The rotating camera approach is suitable for creating panoramic images of static or at most slowly varying scenes, but fails when there exists significant motion in the environment. We are currently developing a camera setup that will be able to capture panoramic images of dynamic scenes, in real time, thus creating Panoramic Video.

Screenshooting/3D-Rendering:

Capturing with Nvidia GeForce stereo3d drivers (now called: stereo3d utility):

The default, of the current pre-release version, is 50 for the JPEG quality which is low, change it to 80 for dircet use of screenshot or 99 if you want to edit or stich a pano (0-99, where 99 is the best quality, all values are decimal). You have to change this is the registry: Press Start->Run...->Type Regedit ->Browse to HK_Local_Machine->Software->Nvidia Corp->Global->Stereo3D and doubleclick on SnapshotQuality and change the value to the desired value, make sure that you have pressed Decimal. I recommend to use LavaSoft RegHance for Windows registry changes.

Software:

VR Surround   Editor and viewer for stereo panorama images; supports scroll and zoom
3D-PIX for image aligment for stereoscopic alignments (works with Winx3D driver)

Utilities:

All utilites are freeware, if not stated otherwise:

File extension changers:   zXTN (easy to use per drag and drop), see overview of available changers at this site
1-4a Rename (very powerfull: can replace extension, blanks, very intersting for song files, undoo function)

File extension changers are needed to replace “jps” with “jpg” when used for separate pano stitching.

            b) Stereo3D Pano Publishing/Viewing

If you use a format like Anaglyph (red-blue glasses), a normal Panorama Viewer (e.g. PTViewer) is sufficient.

For shutter glasses no PlugIn or ActiveX-Control for a browser is currently available, but you can make the images (2 images: left and right) available for download. The following standalone application can than be used for viewing.

All viewers are freeware, if not stated otherwise:

1.      glPanoram_VFX3D_stereo   Gallery   Article
It can load 2 jpeg images (cylindrical pano format) as source and show them in interlaced or HW page flipped stereo. Mouse, keyboard and optional VFX3D/Cyberpuck navigation. The images should be visualized in stereo by LCD glasses or by the HMD headtracing system. Best viewer for shutter glasses so far!

2.      SPISY Stereo Panoramic Imaging System

3.      Paul Bourke's Camera File (Recording) for PovRay and his Stereographic 3D Panoramic-Player for Linux
His player displays either cylindrical or spherical panoramics and he has something else for cubic. It supports both frame sequential stereo and what we are now using which is passive stereo using dual head cards, double width display with left eye on one half and the other eye on the other half.

4.      Bubble   Site in French, English User Guide and Software available
It is impossible to get real stereo with the "Bubble" like software. There is no steresocopic information in the source data, you can only shift the weaving plane. You need cylindrical projection and much more compiliacated source image procesing.
You need panorams from 2 cameras, you must make ekvatorial correction in adition to imige stiching and croping.
Anyway Bubble has not the displaying problems Kube has.

5.      Kube (DirectX and OpenGL version)
They can load the 6 images (or faces of the cube) from PNG, JPEG, or MOV (QuickTime cubic panoramas) files.
With Kube you can often see the corners of the box.

Projectors:

PanoramTechnologies Pano3D Converter  More info on polarized glasses
It can take the sequential left eye/right eye image stream generated by visual super computers for active matrix stereographic viewing (computer output in page flipping mode) and convert it to a two channel, parallel image stream that can be sent to dual polarized projectors. Each left eye and right eye image is buffered to display twice as long (so they are displayed together at the same time) . This allows for passive stereographic displays using low cost, polarized glasses.

The DpethQ software ($ 1.900.-) can proces both still images and video. Implementing of panoramatic stereo rendering modul depends on interest in this technlogy - the code is internaly ready to do this ...  If someone has some comerical planes with stereoscopic panoramas please tell this to Lightspeed people and Michael Husak will implement the mode.
