keep it like that. till 1000 acres.. Simple for now, but effective in my point of view
Build 30% arms and 30% banks... That way you can make a vast army pretty fast..
This allows you to grow faster.
40-45 DPA(defence points per acre) is normally pretty safe.

Patriotism :when you need lots of soldiers
Inspire Army : as often as possible: This will lower maintenance and speed build your troops
Miner/Greater prot: for xtra defence.
If you have runes left Fertile lands/ Nature Blessing..: If you make to much food I don't see much use in using them, but everybody does it, so why not
They do the same BTW, but NB lasts longer and gives some added prot against storms or droughts
Don't count on being very powerful when you have to build up your province. Go for DEFENCE first, after you reach a thousand acres and your science is high, Than you'll have the additional power to be really strong.
Another important thing you have to know when you start out half way the age:
At the very start of the age, noone is big yet.. This means that you can take higher risks in trying to get bigger than other ppl.. You can play with lower defence, and with luck, you might just pull it off.
At this point of the age, such thing isn't possible anymore.. There are too many provinces already bigger than you are, and when your defence sucks, you'll get attacked.. 100% sure...
So you have to chance the strat of growing.. FIRST DEFENCE THAN GROW..
You won't grow as fast as you would like, but it also means you don't get you a$$ kicked all the time. >
And that keeps the game more fun.
