19thCentury Women VS. The 21st Century A Doll’s House examines the lot of women in late nineteenth century Europe. Compared to the present, some situations have improved dramatically; while others have actually gotten worse, from the work place, to prostitutes. Women were discouraged from working in those times because of society’s belief that women were lesser then men. As the family wage began to be more allocated to the men’s visible work, women’s household work became unimportant and invisible to the public. Women’s workload in the house increased drastically as their status was reduced. The notion of work as something that took place outside the household also emerged in the late 19th century and helped to exclude women, especially married women, from the workforce. This devalued women’s contribution to the economy and kept them out of the organized union movements. Women today have their own jobs, even their own company; they can financially support themselves and some even a whole family. This is a phonomical leap of change compared to how it was; unfortunately it has taken far too long for it to happen. Many women were forced to walk the streets because they simply had no other choice. It is important to remember, however, that there were as many varying categories of prostitutes as there were social classes in Paris at the time. At the opposite end of the spectrum were courtesans, who were kept mistresses of the bourgeoisie and nobility, and often chose this particular lifestyle for its relative freedom and assured luxury. Though these women found themselves in a direct contrast, they were both subject to societal response via artistry. While the lower classes of registered and unregistered prostitutes found themselves regulated by the government and law enforcement, courtesans were virtually ignored by those in the government, who basically turned a blind eye to their existence. Unfortunately this situation has not improved, in fact it has gotten worse. Prostitutes are in every town and city in at least some form; the thing that people must understand is that with today’s prostitutes there are more risk factors than just HIV, other STD’s are out there, for example herpes, and hepatitis b. Today women are given equal rights as men as compared to nineteenth century Europe when they had almost none, most problems have improved extremely, but there are still allot that have not, and have gotten to a point that it has worsened
