Best Sonic Ever?
After being defeated by Sonic in the first game, Dr. Robotnik now turns to a strange new island so he can once again collect the 7 Emeralds (yeah, now there are 7 of them). This game blew the first right out of the water. Focusing mainly on speed this time and less on platform jumping, this is considered to be one of the best Sonic games ever made. Something that really made this game better then the first was the Spin Dash. By holding down and pressing the jump button, Sonic would rev up like a turbo engine and then blast off at top speed. Speed was the main thing here in the first levels. Also, Sonic Team thought it would be cool to include a feature called "Blast Procesing" to make Sonic even faster. The first time you saw it, you went "Agh! Not so fast! Where am I going!?". Sonic sometimes goes so fast, the camera can not keep up with him and you can't see where you are going. Not something good. Also, what "Blast Procesing" really did was turn off the background and enemy animation so the game could focus on runing really fast. I don't know why so many people thought it was a good idea back then because today everyone laughs at it. Sonic is not alone in this adventure. A new friend called Miles Prower joins up with him. He has a cool ability to fly using his 2 tails (2 tails? Must be some of Eggman's poluting factories and toxic waste) earning him the nickname "Tails". Tails is only there to show off the G/MD's procesing power, to collect a extra ring and land an extra hit now and then, and to get in the way. He always seems to get in the way. You may not notice it until you go into a special stage. He will lose a lot of your hard earned rings and makes the special stages a lot harder that they need to be. You can choose not to have him following you around in the options menu though, as well as play as only Tails. The 7 special stages are nothing like the original 6 from the first game. These stages are hard. Especialy if you have Tails following you. Earning then will cause you frustration, but the reward is well worth it. Even if you do get stuck in a few walls. Get stuck in walls you say? Yes, there is a major glitch in the game that happens mostly when you have a speed shoes powerup, or runing around as the blast procesing hog, Super Sonic. Sometimes you get stuck in walls. It looks very weird when this happens. The end result is death, weither it is instant or by time over, there is no way to get yourself unstuck. This really sucks, and happens a lot while playing as Super Sonic in the Metropolis Zones. The last thing to mention here is the new multiplayer mode. Play 3 stages from the game, or a multiplayer version of the special stage. The special stage mode works well, but there is a lot of slowdown in the other stages. Plus, because of the split screen, everything looks squashed. Squashed graphics and lots of slowdown does not make for that much of a good time, although it still can be fun. The other thing you can do is play the single player mode as you play Sonic, and player 2 could be Tails. You could get some much needed help in those pesky special stages and a lot of much needed help during the bosses (not the last one though unfortunatly). For instance, look at how fast you kill the Metropolis Zone boss when Tails attacks him flat out without fear of dying. You will have killed him faster than ever before thought possible. |
Blast Procesing!
Graphics: Improved from the original. Robotnik still smiles whenever you hit his machine, which always makes me laugh. Oh boy! He hit me! I think I will smile instead of make an angry face! I think the backgrounds are a little more detailed as well. Sonic has a bunch of new animations as well. Very much improved from the original. 10/10 Sound: Wonderfull. The themes of Emerald Hill, Chemical Plant, Casino Night, Hill Top, Metropolis, Wing Fortress, and all the rest are very good. Sonic has been known for great music, and it is because of games like this one. But while the music is good, the other sounds are annoying. Everytime you jump, you get this WOOOP sound. It did not bother me until I figured out that everytime you jump, Tails also jumps. Then you get 2 WOOOP sounds. Yeah it sucks, but you will just have to get used to it. 9/10 Control: When blast procesing at super high speeds all you really need to do is hold foward. But controling at normal speeds is great. I can move Sonic perfectly wherever I want him to go. Moving him is a bit awkward though in the special stage, but that is understandable when you are runing through a pipe. 9/10 How Fun Is It?: Are you kidding? I have played this game so many times. I consider it to be the greatest Sonic ever made. Why, just earlier today I found myself playing this game all over again and saw how much fun it was to speed through Emerald Hill at fast speeds. I also found myself having a difficult time trying to beat the last boss again. The incredebly easy difficulty of the first stages is later counterbalanced by the chalenging final stages, and last bosses. If everyone would just play one Sonic game, it would have to be this one. 10/10 The Fruit: I have been playing this game for 9 years. Still no sign of fruit. Better keep looking... 1/10 Final Score: 10/10 |
Damn you cheap final giant Eggman robot boss!
Another thing nice to know about this game is that is was released on the same day worldwide on Tuesday November 24 1992, or Sonic 2's Day. A bad take on the word Tuesday, but a great idea to release the game on the same day worldwide. If only other game compainies would start doing this. The only other game I know that was also released on the same day worldwide was Sonic Adveture 2 and that was because of 10th anniversary. Heres hoping that Sonic Team does it again for the 15th anniversary. |
