This game was waaaaaaaay different than the original Super Mario. A lot of people wonder why too. Well the answer was simple really. Well not really but here it goes anyway.

Super Mario Brothers 2 was released in Japan. It was like the original one. Same graphics, same sound. The only thing that was diffrent was 2 things. Mario was the same as last game while Luigi jumped higher but was harder to stop. Also, the difficulty had been shot through the roof with this game. Thinking this game would be too hard for the American gamer, they took a pretty fun game called Doki Doki Panic and changed a few sprites and graphics around. Basically what they did was take an entirely different game, put Mario in it and called it "Super Mario 2" in the States. I don't know if this Mario was ever released in Japan, but it was released over there as part of Super Mario All Stars and Super Mario Advance. If anyone is wondering, over there it is known as "Super Mario USA".

So what makes this Mario game so diffrent? Well first off is the story. Mario has a dream one day. In his dream he entered this strange land. Some weird people asked for help. Since he realized it was a dream when he woke up he could not care less about it anymore. Later that day Mario went out for a picnic with Luigi, Peach and the ever annoying mushroom man, Toad. Anyway, he decides to enter this cave for no reason and somehow opens a door to the land of his dream. Now he realizes that his dream was much more than a dream and so he sets off to defeat the evil toad. Not Toad the mushroom man, although I would like to see that, but Wart.

Now forget about the story, you wont ever think of it again. Now you are on your way to play a way different and strange Mario game. The first thing you realize is that jumping on ememies does not defeat them. Instead, you have to pick them up and throw them at other ememies. Or you can pick up... ugh.... vegetables and throw them. Why vegetables? Why not fruit? At least they have some fruit in the form of a cherry. Collect 5 cherries and a star of invincibility will appear. Now on to the characters and items.

Mario: The all around avrage character with avrage jumping, strength, and speed. In other word, B-O-R-I-N-G. He is good to for beginers, but for everyone else he is not really good except if you want all you abilities to be equal.

Luigi: When I first tried him out I died almost instantly. I though he had the worst jump. When Luigi jumps, it is not a jump, but a huge gigantic leap that makes him stay in the air for a few seconds before coming down. The extreme jumping power will annoy everybody who tries it, but once you get used to it, you discover that Luigi is one of the better characters in the game. His power and speed lack though.

Peach: The Princess has bad speed, bad power, and bad jumping. Why would you want to play with her then? Because she also has a special ability to hover in the air for a few seconds. This hover power is the only reason you should ever pick her because it comes in handy when you need to make tricky jumps like in level 6-2, but on a normal level it hardly comes in handy at all.

Toad: The mushroom man. Bad jumping. In fact, the worst jumper in the game. But he has incredeble strength for such a small guy. Makes me wonder how they expected us to believe that a little mushroom man is stronger that a fat Italian plumber. Toad also runs insanely fast, but only when he is holding an item. That makes even less sence than his strength. Normaly, when I am holding something heavy I run slower. Maybe that is the power of the mushroom people. To defy all logic and confuse us.
