The first of our 2010 games
In the Dead of Winter
General Howie srikes at Warshington!

This is our first game for the year 2010. We played this at Jay Stribling's home in Jackson Mississippi on January 2nd. Our rules were Disperse ye Damned Rebels by former Jackson Gamer Larry Brom, with a few "home brewed" modifications.

The bleak winter scene at day-break before the troops arrived. The ice-choked river is dimly visible at right.

The Brittanican commanders. From left: Sean Pitts (checking to see if his hair is still attached), Larry Reeves, and Bill Hamilton. Not shown, Phil Young.

Several of the Murican Patriot commanders gazing at the battlefield. Jay Ainsworth (really cut off on the left) the Jerry Lee Ainsworth, and Ed Sansing on right.

Only two Patriot brigades were allowed to set up on the field. They could not move till they passed a "rally" die roll. The others were in camps off table to the rear. They could not march onto the game table till "rallied."

The red boxes are for troop storage and are made from cut-up advertising signs. You may see them in several photos.

Who were the players in this game?

The Patriot players were John Murdaugh, Jay Ainsworth, Jerry Lee Ainsworth, and Ed Sansing. The British players were Sean Pitts, Larry Reeves, Bill Hamilton, and Phil Young.

The Patriots have deployed their allowed two brigades on the battlefield. The Brittannians have not yet landed.

The first wave of the Brittannians "hit the beach." These troops are under the command of Larry Reeves and are elites. They were like bulldozers, moving the Rebels back ahead of them.

Larry Reeves' Brittannian brigade is ashore in the far corner of the field.

What was the scenario behind the game?

The British general Howie, in an attempt to surprise Warshington, crossed the Delaware river in the last days of Frigid 1776 to fall on the Patriots in their winter camps. The British had to cross in landing barges, each of which could only hold a half-battalion of infantry (3 stands) or one troop of cavalry (1 stand) or one section of guns (1 stand).

The first Murican reinforcements march onto the table. Unfortunately They then did not receive orders for several turns and remained stuck at the edge of the battlefield.

The Patriot units in the church yard and just to the right of it cannot get organized and may not move till they pass the "rally" die roll.

Note the bright cheerful day outside. It really was quite cold, but a sunny day.

The second wave of boats brings ashore the Highlanders and the combined Brittannian light battalion.

The defenders get organized, opposing the Brittanian forces of Larry Reeves (front) and Sean Pitts (rear rank).

The Patriot horse are moving around the extreme eastern edge of the battlefield. John Murdaugh was thier leader and he was trying to slip into the Brittannian rear.

With the third wave of the Brittannians on the field, the Patriots around the churchard finally began to move forward.

The Rebels would have loved to fall upon the enemy as they emerged from their boats, but the game-master's scenario only allowed them to come into action in driblets. This reflected their being surprised by the Brittannians.

a better shot of the Brittannians. The red color reflecting off the "snow" is a puzzlement. There was no red light in the room!

Larry Reeves (at left) and Sean Pitts watch the Rebels while their fellow Brittanian, Bill Hamilton, looks through the scenario and victory conditions.

An even batter shot of the Brittannians forming ranks after landing, Highlanders in the center, Lights on the right. That pink snow shows up again!

The Brittannians began to wheel to their left to meet two sharply dressed units of Rebels advancing against them.

A nasty cavalry action at the river's edge as John Murdaugh's Patriot Dragoons attempt to get behind the Brittannians.

A dark photo but showing the dramatic action after the Brittannian Light Dragoons fell back and the Patriot horse spurs at the enemy flank. Regrettably for the Rebel cause, the disciplined Brittannian infantry merely turned and gave fire, destroying the enemy cavalry.

This photo, and the next, while dark, show the Patriot regiments deploying out from the area around the church.
