This is a shrine to my favorite manga (Japanese comic), GUNNM, also known as Battle Angel Alita. It's written and illustrated by Yukito Kishiro.
GUNNM is a set far in the future in a post-apocalyptic version of Earth. The utopian city Tiphares floats above the Scrapyard, a corrupt and crimefilled city in which people, to make themselves stronger, often replace their real body parts with machinery, making themselves cyborgs.
The main character of the story, Alita (known as Gally in the Japanese version), is a young cyborg who was found in a junkyard by Doctor Ido, a doctor specializing in cyborgs. When Ido found her, she was little more than a head, and had amnesia. He gave her a body, and, after a series of events, she discovered that in her past life she was a fighter, who used a type of martial arts known as panzer kunst (armored arts). This is when Alita decides to become a fighter. This is the beginning of an epic story that I encourage everyone to read, if they can find it in stores. The illustrations are incredible, the story is incredible, and it possesses a depth and quality that's amazing.
