The definition on "royal family" here is anyone who's related to to the king or one of his sons/daughters. This means that if, say, a lion becomes the mate of a princess, he also becomes a member of the extended royal family. Thus, the family in its totality can actually be quite large, with a large number of the pride's members claiming some type of relation to it.
