Greta, The Boxer

2/6/1989 - 2/15/2001

Unfortunatley on Febuary 15, 2001, a few days after her 12th birthday our Beloved Friend and Companion left us. She lost her all to short battle with thyroid cancer. It has been hard on the entire family, skin & furry alike. We will always have a place in our hearts for the best Boxer in the World, Greta.

Greta's Story

My name Is Greta and I was born in Texas on 2/6/1989 and placed with a wonderful family soon afterwards. Mike & Andra had a 2 year old girl named Melissa whom I adored and became best buddies with. We eventually moved from Texas to NJ and I lived happily with them. They added another little girl to our family and another boxer named Clifford. We had a wonderful life and the best home a dog could wish for.

Then one day 10 years after I moved in with them, my human father accepted an offer to work overseas in England. It was a hard decision to make because they knew England has a 6-month mandatory quarantine for dogs from the USA. My human Mother decided to put Clifford and I up for adoption and placed a message on a rescue board for Boxers. She received several offers for Clifford - but none where she felt she could send him, and no one inquired about me. Thereafter she decided to place me with a family friend and to take Clifford to England since he was younger and healthy enough to survive the quarantine. I moved and Clifford was readied for his journey. Meanwhile, a lady named Jennifer from the Philadelphia area asked about me, but Andra told her I had been adopted - though if it didn't work out she would get back to her. Well - my new home didn't work out; it seems that the little boy of that family was allergic to me. So Andra contacted Jennifer. After a month of e-mails - on a warm September day in 1999, she decided to take me to meet Jennifer and her boyfriend, Joe.

Jennifer had pet Boxers before, but a divorce and a change in living arrangements forced her to give them up. Joe, on the other hand, never had a dog. He did have a rescued cat named Magic - and he was worried I would eat it or something. I could tell from the moment I met Jennifer I would love her - and set out to win over Joe and the cat. The cat decided I was an intruder and swatted me. Thankfully, he had no claws and it didn't hurt. It scared me but I didn't bite him (actually I ran from him), that and a few strategically placed kisses won Joe over rather quickly. After a little while Andra agreed with me that these were the right people for me and that I would be happy here.

It was difficult for me at first. I missed my Melissa and the cat hated me. All that changed a few days later when I met Jennifer's children. She had a 15-year old girl and an 9-year old boy. Niki reminded me of Melissa and it helped me to adjust to my new home.

We keep in touch with my old family by frequent exchanges of e-mail and photos. Clifford got through his quarantine with few problems and is now enjoying the life of a country dog. I am actively pursuing my career as a couch potato.

The cat and I have reached an 'understanding' as well. He swats me; I ignore him. Actually -I kinda' like him and understand that he had been an "only child" before I came along. We each got very lucky when Joe & Jennifer took us into their home and their hearts.

Joe and I have become best buddies. Recently, I was ill for a few days and could not manage the steps to the outside (we live on the second floor of our apartment building). He carried me up and down until I was better. Of course, I was grateful and showed him how much I loved him, repeatedly and sloppily !

We have added a new cat named Smokey Mom recently to our happy home, and she had 2 kittens! The kittens, a male long haired tabby named Squealer and his little brother a short haired grey named Pepper, have started to think they are Boxer's! If you don't believe me let me tell you something about them, Squealer uses his front paws just like a boxer, he sits on his haunches while he bats his toys! Pepper grooms me and Barks like a dog!
