What The Hell Is Square Thinking?Note: This is the Opinion of Sean and not the views of this site or of the other editors So Square is going back to there whole Medivel thing. Fine by me!, I remember the good ol' days of the Knights and the orphan peseant farmer taking down whatever was going to disrupt the world of eternal peace and harmony. And by all means, the Sci-fi thing was good too, it's just a little nostalgic for me. About a couple months ago when Steiner, Zidane and Vivi were introduced, I was totally happy with that design. Now looking at the remaining characters, I can see why they released the "normal" ones first. 
Remember when they made Final Fantasy VIII, they said that the more realistic looking characters would now be the thing of the futute and the big head, small limbed, midgets of yesteryear would be the thing of the past?. I did, and I loved the fact that Squall (gasp!) accually looked human. Same with Rinoa and the rest of the gang. Whenever you make the characters and the story more human than the closeness you get to the characters is greater. You see there faults, you feel there triumphs, you witness there sadness. Now, I'm not saying you won't get that in Final Fantasy IX. I still believe that Final Fantasy IX is on pace to become the greatest Final Fantasy ever. It's just that when you see Zidane bouncing around with his tail, it's a lot harder to feel the emotional connection. 
But Zidane, Steiner, Vivi and Garnet are not the problem. I think that the others are some of Amano's weakest designs. Look at Eiko, do you think Amano-san was running out of ideas. I bet he probably said: "Hmm...I can't think of another character... I know!...I'll make a minature Garnet!". Not to take away from Amano, he is one of the greatest scetch artists of all time. The things he can draw with a pen and paper amaze me to no end. But his illustrations don't always translate into games so well. I mean, look and Flyer and Kuina. Those are not good characters in any sense of the word. There ugly, we can't see facial things well, there just not good characters. I still have faith in Square to change things around. Maybe we just didn't get the best pictures of them, Maybe we just haven't seen enough of them, Maybe I should stop critisizing them until official pictures come out!. Back To Main |
