I guess with the completion of the Tourney Of Champions, this is probably the best time to act on what has been on my mind for several weeks: the termination of the Ginmistress Gin Tournament.
I started it on December 19, 1999 and watched it grow to a level of 35 players taking part each week. The addition of the Tourney of Champs added an extra incentive and created an air of friendly competition. The joyful anticipation of joining my friends every Monday became a focal point to the extent that my week's activities revolved around our weekly tournament. This prompted the one with whom I share my love to suggest on more than one occasion that I "should get a life." Well, after several hours of reflection following last night's tourney, and more hours of reflection after a sleepless night, I have decided to take that advice.
The shrinking number of players has been a source of disappointment to me, but I accept the reality that after almost 4 years and 191 tournaments it is difficult to sustain an ongoing interest. I have been coping with this for several months, but that compounded a more serious problem which has made my situation untenable.
It is human nature that we sometimes encounter people with whom we cannot get along; such was the case in our group. My main challenge was to avoid pairing opponents whose regard for each other was less than complimentary. At the present time I had requests from six people not to be paired against certain opponents. With less than 20 players taking part it became an impossibility, and an undercurrent of covert animosity began to manifest itself when these pairings could not be avoided. I can handle anything but this, and the anxiety and inner turmoil it caused me finally led me to make my decision.
It's not a decision I have made lightly, and I do so with a feeling of sadness. But it struck me in the late hours of the morning that next Monday is Thanksgiving Day in Canada, and my association with you has given me something for which I can be thankful: your friendship. You have shared with me your personal stories, the stories and pictures of your children, grandchildren, spouses, and allowed me to share your joys and anxieties because you know I really care. And whether we chatted a little or a lot, my affection and respect for you is still there in equal measure for all of you.. Thanks for all your support and your thoughtfulness toward me.

RULES

  1. This is best-2-of-3 knockout tourney, 100-point games.

  2. The tournament will be completed in one evening-no carry-overs.

  3. Maximum number of participants will be 48.

  4. There will be no byes in the first round unless there is an odd number of participants. Additional byes, if necessary will be be granted randomly, determined by the number of no-shows and the number of participants remaining.

  5. Games: 100 points, knocking permitted, no time limit.

  6. Waiting period: Players who are not in their places within fifteen minutes of the starting time will have to forfeit. Players who are booted or have to leave the game for any reason have 15 minutes to resume or forfeit.

  7. If a game is suspended before it is completed, it will resume at the same score as was in effect when the game was halted. Please be sure to keep track of the scores after each hand.

  8. It could take three hours, or more, to complete the tourney; therefore, chatting should be kept to a minimum and visiting and/or kibitzing should be discouraged.

  9. If a player asks that the table be made private the host must comply with that request.

  10. All participants will be included automatically in the next tournament. If you are unable to play on a given night, an email to that effect will move you to the following week's schedule. However, if you are no-show without giving notice you will be placed on the waiting list.

  11. If a player gets booted the opponent should notifiy me so that I have a record of the time of the disconnect. This will assist in resolving disputes should any arise. Anyone who has the misfortune of being booted twice in the same match will have to forfeit that match. If a player is forced to withdraw for personal reasons his/her place will be taken by the player he/she just played in the previous match.

  12. RATINGS: The player with the highest rating will be the host of the table. As such, that player has the option of making the game rated or unrated. This should alleviate the concerns of those who wish to protect their rating.

  13. This tournament will run every Monday, and will begin at 8:00 pn E.S.T in the Advanced Room, International Games, Canada

  14. If you intend to participate please be in the lounge at least 10 minutes before game time.
