The Official Homepage of the Rainbow Despair RPG Project

Rainbow Despair is a comical Japanese style RPG in the vein of the Lunar RPG series and The Slayers anime series. Rainbow Despair is free to download (given my art skills, it would hardly succeed as a commercial product) and was created because of my love for RPGs.

Original demo released on August 12, 1999.
Version 2 released on Sept 27, 1999. Download it here (370KB)

What's New (1/14/99):
A walkthrough for Chapter 1 is now available. Version 3 is coming along nicely and I just finished two new general features - it's now possible to load a saved game outside of the main menu and the game now shows who can use different equipment when you're browsing in stores.

What's New (12/31/99):
Version 3's release date has been moved back to sometime in January. Sorry.

What's New (12/3/99):
Not much progress has been made since the last update, but I still plan to have Chapter 2 out by the end of December (after my finals in a few weeks, I should have plenty of free time to work on it). Here's some details of what will additions will be in the next version - 3 new playable characters (and the ability to set your active party), 3 new dungeons, around a dozen new spells and techniques, and a lot more accessories.

What's New (11/19/99):
Just started this website (easier than I thought it would be). The next version of Rainbow Despair is currently scheduled for sometime in December.

Essential details of the current version of Rainbow Despair:
Over an hour in length.
4 playable characters.
14 useable spells and techniques.
A Dragon Warrior/Quest style battle system.
Over a dozen enemies.
4 dungeons, 2 towns.
Humorous and quirky story and dialogue.
Music CD support (specifically designed for use with the Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete Music CD though it works with any music CD).

Introductory Story

Let me tell you a tale of that awesome power that shook the very heavens from their foundations many years ago. The power commonly called Rainbow Despair.

My tale begins, innocently enough, with a 16 year old girl named Molly Despair. Enrolled in the academy of witchcraft in the southern part of the kingdom of Elzdor, she was being instructed in those magical arts essential to a woman of high stature. Spells for cooking delicious meals, creating beatiful quilts and decorations, entertaining guests, and other highly useful tasks made up Molly's daily studies. But Molly was not interested in such things. She dreamt of a life of high adventure, not high society. And so, one day, she left the school of witchcraft to make her mark on the world as an adventurer.

Accompanied by her friend and familiar, Larry the cat, and armed with her trusty broom, she was determined to succeed. Little did she know that the forest surrounding the academy of witchcraft was filled with strange and vicious monsters who loved to devour little girls who were foolish enough to wander into their domain. And so, my story begins.
