Rifled Barrels in Paintball

Let me say this right off the bat so you get the point of this article, RIFLING HAS NO PLACE IN PAINTBALL so long as we are still using gelatinous, round, liquid filled rounds. Firstly, the rifling used in paintball gun barrels is often ported along the length of the cuts. This deletes it's spin-imparting ability as there are no longer "tracks" for the ball to follow, but tiny segments of lines in the bore. They will do nothing exsept provide a place for broken paint and dirt to hide and kill accuracy. Squeegies cannot clean these slits well.

The same goes for non ported rifled barrels, the grooves just collect things you don't want in your barrel.

Now, you will want to know, "do they really increase accuracy". Over your stock barrel (unless you've got a Nova), yes. Over any other non rifled aftermarket barrel, no.

Now, someone with an Armson Stealth (most popular rifled barrel) will say their gun is real accurate. This is because that barrel has a good finish, just like any aftermarket should, and they are probobly matching their paint to their barrel bore well. Those are the keys to accuracy; barrel finish and paint:bore match. Not ventury bolts. Not rear cocking. NOT RIFLING.

*Velocity consistancy is another factor, but this goes with range more than accuracy if you're wondering*

I suggest you stay away from rifling at all costs, as it will hurt you for the whole rest of the game after your first ball break, until you get access to running water to really get the grooves clean.

A much less common but still used form is straight rifling, such as featured in the last inch of a stock CCI barrel. For those of you familiar with real firearm technology, this accomplishes the same thing as a "wadstopper" choke. In a shotgun, this stops the wad from spinning and holds the shot together for longer, accomplishing much tighter patterns. This does actually work well in the CCI barrel, as it's in the last inches, and straight rifled. It sets the ball on a nice straight, NON-spinning course. The opposite of what accuracy reducing spiral rifled barrels accomplish... Say something about spiral rifling?...

Smooth bore is the only way to go with the current amunition used in paintball.
