Chocobos

Having trouble breeding that gold chocobo? Can't win that last race? Here's how.

Breeding Chocobos

You can first begin breeding chocobos when you aquire the Highwind. Just take a hike to Bill's Chocobo Ranch near the Mythril Mine. You must first purchase a stable from Chocobo Bill for 10,000 gil a piece. I suggest that you not buy less than three for starts. Later on in the game you will probably end up buying every stall available but you don'y have that much gil yet. You can find chocobo's anywhere that there are chocobo tracks on the landscape. There are 8 different classes. Here is a list of the different classes and where they can be found.

Obviously the better the chocobo, the harder it is to catch. To capture a chocobo, you must walk on the tracks untill you get in a fight. defeat all the enemies except the chocobo to capture it. If you attack it, or if it gets scared, it will run away. If you throw it a green, which you may purchase at Chocobo Bills, it will stay in the fight longer. The better the green, the longer it will stay interested. Chocobos also eat nuts, but only when they are breeding. You should never need to purchase a nut. That is because the only nuts you need are the Zeio Nut and the Carob Nut, both of which are used to breed special chocobos. You may find the carob nut in the woods near Bone Village. You must get in a battle with a Vlakorado and steat the nut from it. You can find the Zeio Nut on a small island northeast of Chocobo Ranch. Steal this nut from a goblin. You can capture four chocobos at a time. after that you must return to Chocobo Bills and choose who to keep. Chocobo Billy will rate your chocobos. Here is a list on what he will say for each type of chocobo.

Chocobo Type

  Billy's assesments
  Wonderful   "This...is a wonderful chocobo!"
Great   "This is a great chocobo."
Good   "Mmm, this seems like a good chocobo."

Fair   "Mmm, this one's not bad."

Average   "This is a pretty average chocobo."

Mediocre   "This chocobo's so-so."

Poor   "This one does'nt seem to be very good."

Weak   "I really can't recomend this one."

Racing Chocobos

Once you have a selection of quality chocobos, you want to feed them greens to increase the quality of the chocobo. Higher quality greens produce more of an increase, but the cost more. Here is a list of the various greens and what they increase.

If you feed you chocobo a green, and it fails to raise its statistics, you've maxed out the quality which that green effects. After maxing out the stats, you should race the chocobos before trying to breed them. Winning races increases the chocobos classes and increases the chances of breeding a special chocobo. You have to go to Gold Saucer to race. As soon as the race begins, you want to take manual control of your chocobo. Increase your speed so that there is a slow drain on your energy. When you neer the finish line, SPrint untill all of the remaining energy is used up. If you are have trouble winning the races, hold in R1 and R2 to slowly refill your stamina meter.

  Special Chocobos

To obtain some special items, such as the "Knights of the Round" materia, you bust breed special chocobos. The green chocobo can walk over mountians, the blue chocobo can cross shallow rivers, the black chocobo can cross mountians and rivers, and the gold chocobo can go anywhere. If you mate to S class chocobos you will greatly increase the chances of breedin a special chocobo than if you breed two C class chocobos. To get a green or blue chocobo, you must mate two good or great chocobos using a carob nut. To get a black chocobo you must mate a green chocobo and a blue chocobo using a carob nut. To get the ultimate chocobo, the gold one, you must mate a black chocobo with an excellent chocobo using a zeio nut. Have fun!
