The HYPERION STEALTH CRUISER was produced with specifications given by the Psi- Corps. The 'official line' was that the ship should have a jammer installed (but this proved impossible at the time) and so a 'intermediate answer' was formulated. Although it was not fully up to the standard of the jammer, the dedicated DEW sensor array proved quite effective -- but not enough for the Psi Corps. The three ships of this variant produced were kept by the EA and used. Although the systems proved effective, the cost did not justify the benifit. Although the dedicated sensor system was smaller than a standard sensor array, (all of the offensive sensor channels are left off -- this was required because the full system would not have fit within the already cramped hull) it needed all of the original power to operate. This lead to the tactical consideration of removing the smaller weapons in favor of the larger Heavy Laser Cannons so that the ship could act in a 'sniper' roll, sitting at long range, painting the enemy with the entire main sensor and hitting it with large blasts. Close in, it was believed that the primary sensor could augment the dedicated, making targeting of the ship a near impossibility. This proved incorrect, as all three were lost in combat within the first two years. The ship simply did not have the maneuverability it needed to keep an enemy from closing.
