WORLD SERIES

The World Series is an important event of the American Baseball. It is a goal, a struggle for the title between the winning team of American League and the winning team of the National League. It is held annually in the month of October after the conclusion of regular season playoffs. The winner of the series is determined through a best-of-seven series. Prior to the start of the "modern" World Series, the National League and the American Association agreed to play a series to be followed by their regular season playoffs. At that time the Reds of Cincinnati represented the American Association, and the White Stockings of Chicago played for the National League. The Reds win the playoffs by 4-0. Until 1891, the post-season playoffs became a tradition. It was only after the disintegration of the American Association, the NL tried a split-season set-up to determine the best team of baseball. The new concept was not welcomed by the fans. As a result, the two preeminent teams of the National League contended against each other for the then so called Temple Cup, named after Pittsburgh owner William C. Temple. The series was undoubtedly a success. In the 1895 Temple Cup series, Cy Young led Cleveland to the title when he won three games in less than a week. In 1901, American League with the support of Ban Johnson came into focus. In 1902, the NL players in lure of money comfort and revenge joined the AL. Though this thing infuriated the National League, but the association didn’t retaliate.  The two leagues mutually signed the "National Agreement." Both the leagues functioned in competition but shared the same game rules. By the end of the 1903 season, the proprietors of the league champions, Barney Dreyfuss of the National League's Pittsburgh Pirates and Henry Killilea of the American League's Boston Pilgrims agreed that their teams will play a best-of-nine series. Now, every year in the month of October the leading clubs of AL and NL after playing their 162 regular season playoffs compete against each other to conquer the Fall Classic title. The modern professional baseball is a best-of-seven series. The Yankees have won 26 titles and appeared in 38 of the 98 series played. The St. Louis Cardinals and the Oakland Athletics are the runners-up. The first two games of the series are played in one team's home ballpark, the next three in the other team's ballpark, and the final two, if needed, back in the first team's ballpark.
