SUPER BOWL

The Super Bowl is the summit of the National Football League. It is an annual American event that usually takes place on the last Sunday in January or the first Sunday in February. It features the winning team of American Football Conference and National Football Conference. It is a challenge accepted by the winning teams and is ultimately awarded to the one who supersedes the other team in a round of playoffs. As a result of the playoff system and the Super Bowl, the NFL season extends stretches from one year into the next, which makes it difficult to determine the winners of a particular season. For instance the team that wins the 1998 Super Bowl, for is coroneted as the 1997 NFL champions. To avoid this confusion the Super Bowl is referred to by Roman numerals.

Prior to the 1966 football season, American professional football's championship games were played between different leagues and were addressed by different names like "All-America Football Conference Championship Game", the "AFL Championship Game" or the "NFL Championship Game", depending on the league promoting it. The Super Bowl was initially known as an AFL-NFL Championship Game and was first played after the 1966 football season on January 15, 1967, between the champions of the American Football League and the NFL. In 1968 with the merger agreement between the two leagues, it has also assumed the name of Super Bowl. The first Super Bowl, took place between the NFL's Green Bay Packers and the AFL's Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers won that game, 35-10, and they also won Super Bowl II, 33-14 over the Oakland Raiders. Since 1970, the winning team receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the coach of the Green Bay Packers, who won the first two Super Bowl games. The Super Bowl is one of the most watched television broadcasts of the year.
