    DIABETES...KEEP IT UNDER CONTROL

  • Diabetes more than doubles the risk of heart disease. Adding other risk factors to diabetes (smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure) has an unbeneficial impact on the heart. Diabetics are at high risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke as well as other serious complications. Ninety to 95% of the people who have diabetes have Type II diabetes, which occurs in mostly overweight and inactive adults, age 30 and older. It develops over the course of several years. Weight loss, diet, exercise, and sometimes either medicines taken by mouth or insulin injections are used to control this type diabetes. Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a diet rich in high fiber carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains), are the best ways to lower your diabetes and heart disease risks. Regular medical check ups are a must. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to major complications. Please check your blood sugar on a regular basis and keep a record of it to show to your doctor when you have an appointment. Any sore that is not healing needs to be be assessed by the doctor.

SYMPTOMS TO WATCH FOR INCLUDE: 1. Excessive thirst 2. Extreme hunger 3. Unexplained weight loss 4. Extreme fatigue 5. Irritability 6. Frequent urination (especially at night) 7. Blurry vision 8. Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet 9. Slow healing of cuts, especially on the feet 10. Frequent skin infections, or itchy skin 11. Drowsiness

    BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

  • October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Mammograms help to detect breast cancer before it spreads. Breast cancer is treatable if diagnosed in time. Monthly self breast exams should done without ceasing Men do get breast cancer too. So men and women "Check Yourself!" Have regular/annual physical exams Examine yourself, too! Eating 5-9 or more fruits and vegetables everyday has been proven to reduce overall risk of getting some cancers. NIH and the American Cancer Association
