Jacomyntje, widowed by Pieter Viele's death in 1684, had married Benoni Arentse van Hoeck. She had two children by Pieter, Teunis and Louis, and one, Gerritje, by Benoni. Benoni was an abusive father, and was cited, September 17th, 1686, to appear before the court at Albany on complaint made by Cornelis Viele and others,
"Yt; Bennony Arentse doth most crewelly and barbarously Beat ye Daughter of Pt; Viele, deceased, of who he is the step father, Wh; child being stood efore ye Justices of Peace is found all blak and blew, and ye said Bennony being sent for by warrant and appearing before ye Justices doth excuse himself because 'she is a whole night and sometimes half a night out seeking cows'
The justices were not impressed with Benoni's defense, and the child was ordered into the hands of trustees Jacob Meese Vrooman and Arnout Cornelison Viele. The identity of this child is unclear, unless Gerritje is incorrectly assigned to the second marriage, not unlikely.
Before I found this document (or realized its significance), I had believed Jacomyntje to have had two sons by Pieterand one daughter by Benoni. At first reading, I thought Benoni had beat his wife, but it obviously refers to hs step-daughter. I believe this also to be the occasion in which Jan Verbeeck identified himself as the (step)grandfather of Jacomyntje, but I can't find the reference.
The above can be found on page 30 of "Teunis Cornelisse Swart and
his Descendants" by Charlotte Taylor Lockhurst, typescript, Albany NY, 1916-22, but I think I've seen it elsewhere.
