Note: A Dartmouth deed dated 3 May 1692 states that James was a witness to the purchase of one quarter of a share of land by John Akin, his brother, at Smiths Neck from Job Briggs. Another deed (see below) shows James purchasing land at Smith's Neck in 1689. Another deed dated 10 Aug 1696 transferred 20 acres at Smiths Neck from Thomas Briggs to John Akin and his brother James. It is not known if James accompanied John to Smiths Neck. The 1689 deed notes him living in Portsmouth. A deed fragment which is believed to be from around 1712, states that James was a vintner (a wine merchant) in Newport at that time. Another deed dated January 27, 1725 notes that James was a "miller".
Note: James was buried at the Common Burial Ground in Newport, RI. The inscription on the stone says, "Here lieth ye Body of James Akin died Decemr ye 17th 1727 In ye 61st year of his age". A picture of this gravestone exists in the R.L. Akin Library.

Note: The Brownell book states that David was a mariner. He died 4 years before his father, James Akin, died. As a result, David's children made claims on the land in Dartmouth that James owned.
A David Akin was admitted as a Freeman at the Proceedings of the General Assembly, held for the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, at Newport, the 1st day of May, 1722. [Records of the Colony and State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Vol 4, 1707-1740.] While it is not certain that this was the s/o James, it is highly likely.
