Brother was Lyman Matthews
Aaron Jr. sold his land and a dwelling in Plymouth, Connecticut Feb. 6, 1779. The family business was surveying, so it is safe to say that Aaron Jr did remove to the Milton district in 1779 to do his work, well in advance of the settlers (who began to arrive in 1782). Finally, the Revolutionary War Record for Vermont confirms Aaron Jr's presence from early 1780 through November 1781. It is as follows:
Although the land was chartered in 1763, settlers did not settle there until after the Revolutionary War. The district of Milton was first settled by William Irish, Leonard Owen, Amos Mansfield, Absalom Taylor and Thomas Dewey in February, 1782. Aaron Mathews made moderator at the first proprietors meeting at Milton on May 7, 1789. -"History of Chittenden County, Vermont " -page 638
Town was organized Mar 25, 1788. Represented in the legislature the same years by Aaron Mathews Jr. who was also Justice of Peace. - Vermont Historical Gazetter, vol. p. 840, Milton, Vermont. Ths aspect whether Senior or Junior was the elected representative has not been established. It is thought that Aaron Senior was not in the vicinity as a resident, and thus Aaron Junior was the member. A search was made in Vermont in 2001, and it was confirmed that a Aaron Mathews was a sitting member and that he was a Justice of the Peace. His vote was recorded and registered.
"In the Vermont State Papers vol. 3, he shows up in the records of votes, etc., but no Jr. or Sr. He was the Justice of the Peace for Milton as well. Sylvia"
1790 Census Town of Milton, Vermont - Aaron Mathews - 2 males over 16 and 2 under; 3 females.
An Aaron and Hannah Matthews sold land and dwelling in Camden, New York in 1808 to Thomas Hart of Paris, Oneida County, New York, USA. This is no doubt the son of Aaron Matthews Sr.. namely Aaron Matthews Jr. and his wife, Hannah Tuttle, since his father had died in 1806.
