"The Night That the Lights Went Out In Georgia"
Georgia patrol was making their rounds,
So he fired a shot just to flag them down
A big-bellied sheriff grabbed his gun and said
"Why'd you do it?"
Judge said guilty at a make-believe trial,
Slapped the sheriff on the back with a smile,
And said: "Supper's waitin' at home, and I gotta get to it."
That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia
That's the night that they hung an innocent man.
Don't trust your soul to no backwoods, Southern lawyer.
'Cos the judge in the town's got blood stains on his hands
Lyrics by Bobby Russell
It sounds like Vicki Lawrence really had it right in her "The Night That the Lights Went Out In Georgia". You could also say, “Don’t trust your child to no backwoods juvenile attorney” or “Juvenile Judge” for that matter. Although the description does not apply to our Pike County Sheriff, I am here to say that in some places in Georgia the lights have been out for some time and remain this way today. Unfortunately, I am finding this is not only in Georgia. Our juvenile system needs major rework not just here, but seems to be a global problem.
Georgia seems far behind most of the country. In fact, The United States Supreme Court had to force to do some restructuring of the juvenile legal and judicial system. Restructuring the judicial system does nothing to change the hearts of those who run it.
Some states are now referring to these courts as “Family Court” Believe me there is nothing “Family” about some of these Juvenile courts. The only Georgia Family Court Judge with a heart just plays one on TV. Judge Glenda Hatchett is NOT the typical Georgia Juvenile Judge.
When The System Fails ... We must Change The System! This organization is dedicated to changing the system back to democracy, equal justice to the poor, and human rights back to children and families.
