Established in 1967, the Indiana Pacers based in Indianapolis , Indiana , became the licensed member of American Basketball Association when a group of eight commercial people endowed a few thousand dollars each. Larry Staverman became the first Pacers coach and Roger Brown the first player, unfortunately whose career came to an end during his freshman year only due to his involvement in some notorious activities. He was barred to compete in any of the NBA games. In the late 1960's and early 1970's, the Pacers ruled the old American Basketball Association by winning three ABA national championships. The Pacers also managed to reach the title round in five of the nine seasons the league survived. In 1976, the Pacers became the premier team of National Basketball Association based after the ABA collapsed. Surviving the collapse, the Pacers modified themselves and re-established themselves as a challenging team of the NFL in the 1990's. |

From 1993 to 1997, the Pacers were coached by Larry Brown. Under his strong management they became responsive and set into motion to launch themselves as one of the leading teams of the league. Twice they saw action in Eastern Conference Finals but missed it both times. The Pacers remained dominant under the valiant efforts of Reggie Miller, one of the NBA's most-preferred, all-time career scoring leader and finest three-point shooters. The Pacers drafted Miller as the 11 th overall pick of the 1987 draft. The Pacers with their will and endeavor proved themselves by appearing in five conference finals, winning two central Division titles and making to the NBA finals in the year 2000.
The Pacers competed in Conseco Fieldhouse ($183 million project), their home sports arena in Indianapolis , Indiana . It also serves as a domicile to Indiana Firebirds of the Arena Football League. The Hall of Famer and a veteran, Larry Bird is the President of Basketball Operations for the Pacers association. He introduced coach Rick Carlisle in the year 2003 who holds the credit for refining and launching the league's finest and aggressive players viz.

Ron Artest is a forceful scorer and an adamant defender. Fred Jones is also a leading player of the Pacers. He won the Slam Drunk Competition in 2004. The official colors of Pacers are Navy Blue and Yellow. Even the logo of the Pacers has been beautifully designed. It is a blue letter “P” with a golden yellow basketball in it. |
