Blackburn East Ballroom
The first Georgia Club general body meeting of the 2004-2005 school year started at 8:11. The meeting started with the introduction of the general body with their name, classification, and high school.
Next, the E-Board introduced themselves to the general body. President Keith Laing stated the purpose of the Georgia Club, which is bring Howard Georgians together and initiating a feeling of a home away from home.
Next, Keith gave the floor to the committee heads to speak about the various committees the club will form this year. Sign up sheets were presented at the end of the meeting.
*Commitee: The committees were as follows:
Fundraising: Chairwoman Morgan Scott was not in attendance, but Keith told members that committee's goal was to plan and execute fundraisers to supplement the money the club raises through dues and organizational funding. He stressed the importance of fundraising and the effect it has on the club's ability to hold events.
Social: Chairwoman Arian Thomas talked about the purpose of the social committee is to put on programs and events for the club and asked for volunteers.
Community Service: Chairman Eric Hall introduced himself next. He talked about the community service project the club did over the summer with the Meals on Wheels, and what he planned to do this year.
T-Shirt: Chairwoman Tosha Holmes introduced herself and then told members that the T-Shirt committee was responsible for overseaing the creation and distribution of all the club's apparrel.
Welcome to the Mecca: Chairwoman Stephanie Erhueh was not in attendance; but President Keith Laing spoke on her behalf and explained that this year would mark the 14th annual Welcome to the Mecca Weekend and that planning would begin in a few weeks. He told members that the Weekend is one of the Club's most important activities and said that it was open to all high school juniors and seniors in the metro Atlanta area. Stephanie plans to have a meeting with the freshmen who went on the trip last year.
Public Relations: Chairwoman Megan Lymon talked about how the PR committee has a lot of the work and its importance to the club. She told members that the PR committee was responsible for informing members, and the campus community at large, of all of the club's activities.
*Dues
President Keith Laing explained that the club would offer a discounted annual dues package of $15 for members who pay by the end of the general body meeting. He said members can pay their dues either after the meeting by giving their money to Treasurer Angela Harris, who would give them a receipt, or online at the Georgia Club website by midnight. The dues will be $20 for the year after October 6.
He said the privileges of paying dues are free or reduced entrance to Georgia Club events and the ability to participate in the Bison 2 Bison Mentoring Program.
*Website
President Keith Laing spoke about the club's website, www.hugeorgiaclub.org, which has been updated recently. He mentioned that there is a message board where members can go and post their ideas and suggestions to the club. Pictures from the summer events were posted up, also. In addition, members can send in their t-shirt ideas to the website and the voting of the designs will be done online.
*Upcoming Events:
Peach Date 2004: President Keith Laing said the club is once again planning a Peach Date Blind Date game and explained the concept to members. He said the hope was to hold the game in October, but stated that it would definitely occur in the first semester.
Organizational Fair: President Keith Laing said the club would once again have a booth at the HUSA Organizational Fair on Wednesday, September 22. He said he hoped to have the best booth of any state club in attendance and that volunteers would be needed to create and work the booth. He said that anyone interested should contact PR Chairwoman Megan Lymon.
95 Souf II: President Keith Laing said the club would once again be throwing a party with the Florida Club, called "95 Souf II." He told members to watch their e-mails and the club's website for more information on the date and location of the party, but promised that since it was the club's first party, everyone with a Georgia ID would receive a discount. He said that for future parties, however, the discount would only be extended to paid members.
*Bison 2 Bison Mentoring Program
President Keith Laing said that the Atlanta chapter of the HU Alumni Association and the Georgia Club will be continuing the Bison 2 Bison Mentoring Program. He explained that the B2B Program is a two-tiered mentoring program in which freshmen members of the club are paired with upperclassmen members in their course of study, who are then paired with HU Alums working in their chosen professions. He said that the program will be open to all active (paid) members of the club and encouraged everyone to take advantage of the opportunity. He said that members can sign up online.
*Shirts
T-Shirt Committee Chairwoman Tosha Homes conducted a vote in which members decided by an overwhelming majority to order hoodies this semester and t-shirts in the Spring. President Keith Laing estimated that the shirts would cost $20 for paid members. Tosha said that the T-Shirt Committeee would accept designs for the shirts until the October General Body Meeting, and after that the members would vote on what they wanted the shirts to look like. She said the committee would then set up days to collect orders and that the shirts would be distributed at the November General Body Meeting. She said that voting for the designs will be done online
*Absentee Voting Drive
Member Tunicia Walker said that she was supposed a drive to register members to absentee vote in Georgia. She distributed the forms and said that the club would pay for the postage of anyone who completely the form. She said that interested members should contact her after the meeting.
