Virginia
Virginia:

In 1604, Jamestown (near the mouth of the James River), became the first permanent English settlement in America.

This stunning land of mountains, valleys and rivers played major roles in both the Revolutionary War and Civil War, and in fact, many leaders of same were Virginians, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, to name but a few.

Both wars took very heavy tolls on Virginia - and in the Civil War - more men fought and died here than in any other state. At Appomattox, in April of 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant - officially ending the Civil War.

Tobacco farming was introduced in the early 1600s, and within a few years, plantations covered the land - from Richmond to the Chesapeake Bay. Even today, Tobacco remains Virginia's most profitable crop.

Hampton Roads, one of America's most important commercial and military ports, sits at the entrance of the Chesapeake at Norfolk. Here the U.S. Navy keeps its Atlantic Fleet.

Virginia is tightly woven into the fabric of America. This historic home of seven U.S. Presidents, is renown for the architecture, beauty and splendor of colonial America.

Virginia

Virginia's official state flag was adopted in 1861. The state's seal was placed on the flag at the start of America's Civil War in 1861.

The flag has a deep blue background with a white circle in the center. The seal in the center features the words "VIRGINIA," and "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIES" (Latin for "thus always to tyrants").

Depicting the state's motto on the flag is the goddess Virtue (who is holding a sword and a spear). She has defeated a tyrant, who is lying on the ground, and is holding a chain and a scourge (a whip). To the right is the tyrant's fallen crown.

Virtue symbolizes Virginia and the tyrant symbolizes Britain. Red Virginia creepers and green leaves surround the scene.
